Who will be the better WR? David Gettis vs. Brandon LaFell

I love me some Gettis. He has shown flashes of greatness. He isn't just a downfield threat either. He had some decent WR screen gains and several clutch 4th down catches.

I was very against drafting LaFell but I think he can be solid if he works hard enough. I think His ceiling is Boldin-ish. I think Gettis' s ceiling is Jerry Rice-ish.

Gettis could be nasty but he cant catch with his hands yet, or hasnt proved that he can in games consistently. He always chest traps it, which is much easier to do. It also limits his catching range by several feet and makes him a liability if the other team has a corner that can exploit that.

LaFell on the other hand has shown that he can catch and he can run. He's not as fast as Gettis but then again neither are as fast as Michael Bates. The comments about LaFell being dumb are unwarranted. We joke and kid which is fine because he brings it on himself, but the truth is that he's made it to the NFL and you cant be that stupid to accomplish that.

Right now LaFell is the better reciever and is the safer longterm bet to be successful, but Gettis has more potential to be a superstar.

Something you would expect from a 6 round pick. He will improve over time with that. Just like Lafells hands got better.

Gettis has that Calvin Johnson type feel for me. He wont get the ball every other play like Steve, but when he does get the ball, it will either be a clutch first down grab or that home run ball.

I see LaFell being more of a, like you said, Boldin type guy. He will be used more often, but mainly for quick looks and shorter pickups.

We are going to have to draft a new WR seeing that Smith probably only has 2-4 more "good" years left in him.

Here is how I see it panning out.

1. The Panthers should be able to get at least 2 years from Smith as their number one receiver and then they need to cut ties and move on.

2. The Panthers need to use a pick between rounds three and seven to add another WR to the group that we already have.

3. Comparing who we have on the roster right now.

Steve Smith- He will still be the number one wide out, but his production will decline as we have all seen in the past. Steve Smith of course is Steve Smith.

David Gettis- I think Gettis will eventually become the Panthers new number one wide out. He has all of the tools and I think we will see him consistently hitting the 1,000 yard mark after Smith retires or is let go. I see him becoming a Miles Austin like player for the Panthers.

Brandon LaFell- LaFell is a decent player, but I don't see him becoming a 1,000 yard man. I think LaFell will continually be in the 500 to 600 yard range just based on his overall ability. I see him being a James Jones type of player for the Panthers.

Armanti Edwards- Armanti Edwards was not fairley giving a chance to play unfortunatley I don't think it will really matter if he does. He will consistently be in the 200 to 300 yard range just based on his desire to be a reciever in the NFL. I see him being a Harry Douglas type of player for the Panthers.

Wallace Wright- I still think the Panthers give Wallace Wright a chance because is a good return man, but much like Edwards I see Wallace only hitting the 200 to 300 yard mark. However, if he makes a name for himself in the returning game; he could be very valuable. I see him being a Josh Cribbs type of player.

Trent Guy, Charly Martin, David Clowney- The Panthers really need to move on from these guys. I know they have talent but the Panthers need some really good talent especially for a Rookie QB or a Jimmy Clausen QB.

In conclusion

For the upcoming years...

Steve Smith = Steve Smith

David Gettis = Miles Austin

Brandon LaFell = James Joes

Armanti Edwards = Harry Douglas

Wallace Wright = Josh Cribbs

Draft Pick = ???

David Gettis, but i dont think he will be a number one reciever. LaFell's biggest issue for me is he tends to drop a pass he should catch. Gettis played well, but it doesnt make me forget Smith and i seriously think if the panthers draft a QB and Smith misses alot of time, then that QB could struggle without Smith.

I like both and think that they make good complimentary receivers to Adriel Jeremiah Green (Our #1 pick)

They are exactly the reason why we won't waste our #1 pick on Green. We burned this years second round pick on a player they expect to be as dangerous as Smitty.

This year (providing the CBA gets done) you will see Edwards get more playing time and show why we took him.

Sorry Green is not our pick.

I'd have to say Gettis right now. He seems to have that extra something (drive? work ethic?) and not saying LaFell doesn't have it, but Gettis I think has legit #1 WR potential; I see LaFell as more of a #2, which seems to be the opposite of many here.

I also don't believe Gettis is only a deep threat. If you remember the 49ers game - the one game where he had decent QB play - Gettis was all over the field. He wasn't just a deep threat there. Also, his 4th down catch in New Orleans was clutch as hell.

I actually think these two make a good combo if we do trade Smith and end up starting them. Gettis has the speed and can stretch the field the way Smith used to while LaFell is the new 'Moose' in a way. Hopefully Armanti can develop into the new Proehl because those 3 were a hell of a trio back in '03. I think with Proehl himself coaching up Armanti he has real potential to actually develop into something like that.

Having said that, though, I don't think we're by any means assured Gettis OR LaFell will develop into a true #1 WR. As pro-Cam as I am, I do admit the prospect of A.J. Green being the featured guy with Gettis as the #2 and LaFell working the slot does sound nice.

I honestly think Lafell is the more talented reciever. Makes big catches at big times, was asked to play all 3 reciever spots, didn't complain worked hard, got better with his hands... At the end of the year ran good routes and got open a bunch.

I think Lafell will pull away from Gettis this year, but with that being said I think Gettis will turn into a legit deep guy for the Panthers... I think we will have a great receiving core for as long as we can keep our guys.

I think it is up for grabs.Hopefully Proel will come in and make them all superstars AEdwards included. My guess is we will be running a QB friendly offense next year so it will have to do with who will gain yardage after the catch.Alot will depend on if Smitty is still around.

    • Not many are talking about this player. He played well as a rookie last year. If he refines his blocking, continues studying film, and keeps working hard, I can see him being the next Greg Olsen. I’m expecting 55 catches, 700 yards, 4 TDs this season.
    • I'm not a Bryce hater and I would 100% move on.  Especially looking at how the upcoming qb draft looks on paper.  Hopefully he continues to improve but if in 3 seasons you're still chasing average season numbers then he's not going to be the guy.  You've just got to keep taking swings until you hit.  Average qbs without any elite physical traits cant get it done anymore.  So this year Hopefully he continues to develop and is above average statistically.
    • Meltdowns???? He was pulled by Canales because he wasn't executing the game plan after 2 games into the season so he could watch Dalton execute the offense and show Bryce the windows available in the NFL, how to push the ball down the field and how to step up and move around when blitzed. When Young came back 5 games later he clearly watched and improved. Enough he was named the future starter. He doesn't have a history of  meltdowns nor is there any reason to assume he will have one. From what I have read he is mentally strong and emotional stable. He may have bad games down the road, everyone does. But this is all a learning experience for him and so far he seems to be making progress. I can understand being hesitant on anything Panthers, but Young has surprisingly been able to gain his confidence after a disastrous start. You aren't alone in being cautious but I think he is the future. I thought he was too small and too short to succeed in the NFL. Honestly I was pleasantly surprised last year and am optimistic about the offense for the first time since Wilks and Dalton were decent.
