The Real Pick...

character issues isnt as big of a deal to Jerry as everyone thinks. if it were, jarrett would have been gone after his first DUI, smith after punching that guy in the film room, punching lucas etc., peppers after he failed a piss test etc.

Yes, but these issues occured AFTER they were drafted. JR wants to minimize this kind of crap. Once you have a contract, you have to work with the player because it is part business.

Then why did we sign Ed Johnson?????

You're just not getting it Teeray.

There is no contradiction here. The standards apply to everyone. Unless, of course, you are already on the team. Or unless you are a star. Or unless you have a personal relationship with Jerry. Or unless you fill a position of need. Or unless you are a desirable free agent.

But yeah, for everyone else, we are rock solid on character and will stay that way as long as its JR's team. ;)

Ed Johnson & Shockey both came with character "issues." Also, Tyler Brayton kicked some guy in the nuts on Monday Night Football with the Raiders before we signed him. Greg Hardy was also said to have some character concerns as did Jimmy Clausen.

Not to mention Keyshawn Johnson in '06, & Mike Goodson, who was said to have some pretty large character concerns as he had bad fueds with his coaching staff as Texas A&M.

So yeah... not really following your logic here. I don't think they'd draft a coke head like Mallett, but Newton? Absolutely if they feel he's a franchise QB. Same goes for Peterson with his pay-for-play rumors, or Fairley (as much as I don't want him) with his character concerns. We've shown interest in all those guys, especially Newton, who WILL be the pick.

Times are changing; the organization is headed in a different direction these days. More open, more aggressive, and less conservative than the Fox era. I'm not saying we're going to become the Bengals and sign every ex-con in the league, but I don't think we're going to let perceived character concerns keep talented players away if they're the right fit either.

All this discussion on Newton, Gabbert, Peterson etc, etc. its all good but the real decision will be based on character. JR has and will always push for players with zero character issues. He represents the owners and has to lead by example, he cant have character players on his team and then push for character conduct policies, HGH testing etc. So take the top 20 players on the board, now remove everyone that has red flags for character issues. Now with the remaining players, remove the ones that are not a position of need. The player remaining at the top of the board, is carolinas pick.

I think his reputation is overblown.I think the word character is used loosely.I think owners do not want disruptive players to the team and players that will likely violate team and league polocy.I do not think they are expecting chour boys.

As long as Newton comes into this organization and works his ass off to be the best QB he can be, then I have no problem with the pick. But I'm scared he will get paid, then turn into the Dwayne Jarett of QB's.
