CSR: Shawn Zobel of Draft Headquarters on Panthers draft plans

According to an analyst I was speaking with yesterday, he said 0% chance we trade the pick at this time because of the risk of no draft next year. Trading to our spot would require future picks which have no value currently. Also in regards to the Denver trade, he said 1% lol

Theoretically that could happen. But I think most people believe there will be a draft next year.

But hell who knows. Maybe in the course of the new CBA discussions they dissolve the draft altogether and go with a different way of bringing in prospects. Then we would be left out to dry.

But if I put a percentage on that it would be like .05%

I don't see that being possible. We'd only be moving three spots down.

Their first and second sounds GREAT to me.

I think we would be very tempted to swap 1st's and take their 2nd... but if we think Cam can be a franchise QB then we shouldn't pass on him.

exactly...if carolina likes cam then they obviously feel he can be that franchise guy...you don't pass on a QB unless you already have one

Didn't NY give up a future first rounder when they swapped Rivers and Manning??

That was one of the best QB drafts in the history of the NFL :P Moving up to get Eli Manning is going to cost more than moving up to get Cam.

It wasn't considered that at the time. Hindsight is 20/20 but there were pretty big questions about all 3 of those guys coming out.

While that's (somewhat) true, it's unarguable that Eli Manning was a better QB prospect than Cam. Just the "Manning" at the end of his name made him about as hyped up as you can get.

In general, drafting QB's is a crap shoot... there's no such this as a "can't miss" QB prospect.

I've seen Parcells QB drafting criteria quoted on here... Parcells drafted Long and passed on Matt Ryan, then drafted Pat White.

If you're waiting for a "can't miss" QB prospect to come along you're going to be waiting a LONG time and you still may draft a bust.

Some people didn't even have Manning the #1 QB in that class. He wasn't unanimous either.

You really think Cam and Gabbert are even comparable to Manning and Rivers? I'm not trying to predict the future, I'm just talking about them as QB prospects. Both were WAY ahead of Cam/Gabbert.

    • I don't think it was fear of the unknown because he tried to hide the extent of the injuries that made him drop. After the drop, the reports I heard were that teams knew what was wrong with his knee and it was something similar to another athlete from a few years ago (honestly don't remember if it was even a football player).  That it was basically one of those things where he should be fine for a while, there isn't a huge concern of immediate injury risk.   But what he has going on with his knee is something that is degenerative and there's little chance he'll be able to play more than 5 or so years on it before he won't be able to play anymore. So basically it was teams knowing if they draft him, he's probably going to be only a rookie contract player and even if he's great, you might not be able to get use out of him on a second contract.  Which in turn makes the drop make sense, but I'm kinda surprised some contending team didn't take him late in the 1st, hoping he'd put them over the top on a SB run but then not even have to worry about giving him a big contract in 4 years too.
    • Depends if they see the writing on the wall with their roster and contracts and decide to bite the bullet and begin a complete rebuild and roster overhaul.  I have no clue why some franchises (IE us) refuse to do this and keep half assing trying to win 8 games or so.  Do it correctly, take your lumps and build a contender.  We shall see what loomis decides.
    • Each team plays 17 games.  I do not see why they don't just have each team play one international game per year.  Neutral site game, 8 home, 8 away.
