Volek not likely an option

I can guarantee that with about as much certainty as you can guarantee that drafting Newton will get us to that.

Volek would essentially be Rodney Peete, part two. He's definitely not my favorite option, but I'd rather get a stopgap that I know I'll only have to depend on for a short time than pick a guy at number one who's I think is gonna take a roster spot for at least three years and wind up not being worth it.

I didn't bring up the subject of how many games Newton would win us or if he would see the field until you said we could possibly end up with no more than 1 win if we drafted him.

Volek is not Rodney Peete. At least Peete started games 3 years prior. Volek hasnt started games in 7 years. He will essentially be taking up a roster spot.

You asked what could be worse than 2-14. I answered. That answer didn't contain the word "Newton" anywhere within.

Drafting Newton - or anyone else for that matter - doesn't take that possibility of us finishing worse than this year off the table.

We most definitely can get worse.

No way in hell will drafting Newton, or anyone else, only bring us 1 win

I know that our new staff will instantly bring us more than 2 wins alone.

I'd like to believe that, but you don't know that either, and neither do I.

Rivera could suck as a head coach, Chudzinski could be an awful OC or we might find out Philly was right about McDermott.

I believe we'll be better this year, but there are no guarantees.

I didn't seriously believe we'd go 2-14 last year. Or 1-15 in 2001 for that matter.

If we blow the #1 pick, regardless of what position we draft, it's gonna hurt...a lot.

What makes you dead certain he'll see the field even if he is the pick?

Without Fox and Davidson football we could have gotten a few more wins.

Now with a whole new staff and new mindset, that counts for something. I can't automatically assume Rivera wouldn't put him out there at some point in the season.

It counts for something, but objectively speaking we have no idea what it counts for yet.

I'm as happy about the new staff as anyone, but most of the guys on staff weren't promoted. They were available for a reason.

We know Rivera doesn't like young QBs having to start early, so if he can avoid it, he will. Whether or not he can avoid it is unknown.

does this mean we're sticking with moore as our veteran QB or we just aren't going after volek?

winning a couple of meaningless regular season games late in the season and getting absolutely butchered while starting the first few games of the following season, doesn't make you a veteran...

on topic: wouldn't read too much into it, since there is no fa market so to speak of.

    • overall agree on the draft grade as a whole on on each pick, but every time I read (and I have read it more than once) that we "gave up two firsts" for Bryce, I am confused. We gave up the 2024 first, but we swapped 2023 firsts, so we didn't give up anything there. We did give up our former first rounder in DJ, but I don't think thats what you mean as one of the "firsts" we gave up.
    • Didn't  see this posted (since 2023) but since folks have been posting that you can't judge a draft class for three years (a ridiculous take), I thought I'd post this to see what people thought about the 2023 draft. Unfortunately this may not be the most interesting class to do this with but I do quite like retrospective draft grades. Would appreciate other's takes on this (and other recent) draft classes.   1(1) - Bryce Young QB: I am a bigger Bryce Young apologist than most (maybe all). I like the kid. But there is no way around it: This was a terrible pick. If he had been picked in the 4th or even the 3rd round I would feel pretty good about it. But this was the first overall pick that we gave up two firsts, our best offensive player to get.  GRADE: C -    2(39) - Jonathan Mingo WR: not much to say here here. He was here for two years. His yards per catch are on par with Bryce's yards per pass. Rough stuff. To date he has still never scored a touchdown in the NFL GRADE: F   3(80) - DJ Johnson OLB: a pick I hated as soon as it happened and an example of why the premise of this thread is honestly dumb. This was a bad pick when it happened. Most people knew it.  Then came training camp and he did not look good. Then came the preseason which confirmed what we saw in TC. Then came the season which confirmed what we saw in preseason. To date, he has half a sack in his career. GRADE: F 4 (114) Chandlers Zavala G: Honestly the best pick of this draft which really speaks to how awful this draft is. Other than Bryce, the only pick still on the team. He is mostly average or below average depth which in round 4 is not terrible. But he had a pff score of 43.5 and though I think people have unrealistic expectations for draft picks, I still would want a little more from a fourth round pick GRADE: C+   5 (145) - Jammie Robinson S: I liked the pick when it happened but ended up being a disappointment. He logged 1 tackle with the falcons last year and not enough snaps to get a grade on PFF.  GRADE: F OVERALL DRAFT GRADE: F
