I personally hope they pretty much condense AFFC and ADWD to one season.

Say what you want but those books had a lot of filler in them, and many of the content of the books are characters travels to different parts of the realm.

A lot of those two books would make for quite boring TV.  I also think a lot of the Summer Isles stuff will get cut or severely condensed.  BY TV standards the cast is already immensely bloated and the Summer Isles is almost a whole new world to explore.  I like a lot of it in the books but it takes too much time away from the characters you already love and are invested in.

Trying to fill a season per book on those two books could be extremely boring, but condensing it to one season mean a LOT of crazy poo will happen in one season and would be much better TV IMO.

Basically, the show runners have recently stated that the show should run 7 seasons to cover the whole story.

S4 starts in April, and will likely cover the rest of ASOS, some AFFC, and even some ADWD.

S5 will presumably film this fall and winter, and air in early 2015. I can only assume that we'll get the bulk of AFFC that we didn't get in S4, and even more ADWD (might have to push some storylines past that then, even). This will mean that anything past ADWD will need to be released in TWOW before spring 2015 for the show not to pass the books.

S6 will film in fall/winter 2015 for an early 2016 release. It should complete any AFFC left unaired, the bulk of ADWD, and some TWOW. This means that TWOW will definitely have to be out sometime in 2015 (which is the last estimate I heard anyway from publishers/GRRM/whoever) or, at the very latest, early 2016.

S7 will then film in late 2016, for an early 2017 airing. It should complete ADWD, TWOW, and ADOS. I don't think that is possible. Either, they aren't planning enough seasons, they plan on leaving it uncompleted as a story, or the "seven seasons" thing was just a number tossed out there. It will also mean that GRRM basically has to finish ADOS by early 2017 if he doesn't want to be overtaken. That means TWOW and ADOS both have to be out within 3 years from, like, now.

Also recently, GRRM basically stated he still thought he could stay ahead of the show, and that he hoped AFFC and ADWD would at least take three seasons between them.

I don't know what to think at this point... They had a sit-down meeting where the show's directors got end-game info (although not highly detailed), then they come out and say seven seasons, and then GRRM indicates that 7 seasons will only basically touch what he's written up until now.

Either:

The show staff isn't really communicating with GRRM all that well (I doubt)

GRRM has no concept of time/reality (likely)
The show and GRRM are on the same page but blowing smoke from time to time to keep publicity (likely)

GRRM is further along on his writing than people know and isn't really too worried (unknown, but I doubt it)

Stretching AFFC and ADWD out to 3 seasons would certainly give him enough time to finish, since it would probably get the show cancelled.

I think the show writers want to get well into AFFC and ADWD by the end of S4, then finish AFFC and most of ADWD while ending S5 with a couple climactic scenes from the beginning of TWOW.  That would leave S6 and S7 to finish TWOW and ADOS.

Seems ambitious (I think 8 seasons is more likely), but probably more realistic than GRRM's ideas.  Then again, we dont know how long or action packed the next couple books will be

seems like it would be difficult to keep the thespians under contract with a hiatus

that was part of the problem with the sopranos and hbo really wants to avoid that

they're also some concerns about actors and actresses getting older in the show when they relatively don't age that much in the books...

Might the show take a year break between seasons at some point to give Martin more time?

They could do that and in it's place do a prequel of Robert's Rebellion or maybe one based around Old Valyrian Freehold/Essos at it's height.

Yep. Casual viewership would drop big time when this is the season 6 finale.

Totally agree and I think that is where they are headed.  AFFC and ADWD being stretched would kill the show.

They are IMO going to have all or most of AFFC and ADWD done by the end of season 5.  Leaving 2 years for TWOW and ADOS.

I was hoping that the last two books are as good as anticipated and Game of Thrones went 8 seasons using 3 seasons to wrap up the last two books.

But either way, I am sensing that they are going to condense AFFC and ADWD to one season with maybe a little overlap at the end of season 4 and the beginning of season 5

Multiple 'Game of Thrones' Movies Eyed by George R.R. Martin

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/game-thrones-movies-eyed-by-689629

Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin says the prospect is being actively discussed.
"It all depends on how long the main series runs," Martin told The Hollywood Reporter on Wednesday following the season-four premiere of the hit HBO series in New York. "Do we run for seven years? Do we run for eight? Do we run for 10? The books get bigger and bigger (in scope). It might need a feature to tie things up, something with a feature budget, like $100 million for two hours. Those dragons get real big, you know."
