QB Camp: Newton

Mr. Scot

So you are saying you wouldn't pay Peyton Manning who waived off the punt team??

Why are we comparing Newton to Manning?

Manning can do anything he wants. He's his own OC. If Newton reaches that point, fine, but the reality is that certain players can do certain things because they've earned the right. It sounds like to Auburn, he had earned that right. Doesn't mean that I have to like that he did it.

When you're about to enter the NFL, you don't really want to make it sound like you think you have better judgment than your college coach. But it sounds like it was a minor thing and not a big deal... so I doubt the teams care much.

Doesn't mean *I* have to like his answer.

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/2004-12-28-week16-replay_x.htm

In the crunchtime sequence Sunday that led to the NFL's season record for touchdown passes, Manning provided a twist: waving off the punt team.

Faced with a fourth-and-4 after an improbable flip to Edgerrin James for an 11-yard completion, the Colts had all of their timeouts and the two-minute warning to work with when the punt team headed onto the field.

There's a lot of things I'd let Manning do. He's earned it.

Manning is capable of calling his own play on the field too. Since he can do it, should we let Cam do it?

Doubt it. Personally, I'd be afraid to have the wrong facial expression if I were standing in front of Rivera.

Dude's scary.

And that what makes me more comfortable with Cam.

Cam and Pete Carrol? No way.

Cam and Fox? Eh, dont like it.

Cam and Rivera? I think Cam will know his place.

I said similar things about Shockey.

Shockey with John Fox as coach? Recipe for disaster.

Shockey with Rivera in charge? Not worried.

Rivera being able to handle Newton's ego isn't an item that appears on my Worry List.

Doesn't mean I'm on board that he's the right choice at #1 though.

so you're totally okay with a guy who has only spent 6 weeks in the offense at a point where he is "comfortable enough" with the playbook to execute the offense as it was meant to be calling his own audibles... and by that we mean trying to QB sneak without anyone else on his team seeming to know that was his plan?

I mean I just am not set with his explanation but if his coaches were cool with it, that's fine. They know better than I do. I still don't have to like it.

I am just saying, real competitors want the ball in their hands at the end of the game, and those are the guys I want on my team.

Brings me back to my original point. It doesn't matter what I think. Chizik didn't mind and actually defended the play. So why should I care??

I understand, but I'd like them to also make smart decisions and also realize that at times the coaches DO know right.

I never said you should care. I said I care. If you don't care, that doesn't bother me at all. All I said was I didn't like his answer. I didn't say "AND TEERAY YOU SHOULDN'T EITHER!!!"

    • this     I never cease to be amazed at the number of people who will run up their blood pressure to get to the grocery store 30 seconds faster or are racing to get to work like it won’t be there at 8:02.   The only thing I’ve ever done that I think added more years to my life besides quitting smoking, was to learn to go with the flow behind the wheel.
    • The term you're looking for is "malinger(ed)", and he didn't.  I'm not sure why Panthers fans act like jaded ex girlfriends.  The dude is clearly injury prone as his time in San Fransico also proves. It's not like he got to San Fran and stopped having problems.
    • My long and rambling post:   The guy is all heart, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he came back even better next year. He’s exactly the guy you lock up. The money won’t ever change the way he plays.  It was a big fumble, but what 1,000 yard back fumbles once in an entire season?  Pride. This team is FINALLY seeing guys who obviously take the game very seriously. Hunt, Chuba, Thielen, Brown, Horn (CB), Coker, Bryce (IMHO). Bye bye, Spider-Man. I don’t see these dudes being OK with teammates half-assing practice or in games. I can see Brown and Horn coming over to talk to somebody.  Good team? Ummm, maybe, but will still likely lose more close games than they win unless this last draft turns in to LOB part 2. That’s a stretch.  Pretty good/decent team. Yes. They finished the season as a pretty good team. I know I sound like a broken record harping back to it, but going in to ATL and putting a 40 burger on them en route to an OT win. A bad Panthers team would have had their brakes beaten off. We’ve seen it.  Rose colored glasses on and bonging a 40 of hopium: There are watershed moments that occur that change the course of franchises, both good and bad. If Fox doesn’t pull Rodney at halftime, the epic journey that was 2003 never happens. On the negative side, Cam taking that one hit from Watt was the end of any and all Panthers relevancy and we’ve been the biggest losers in all of pro sports as a result. Watershed moments. LOB draft. Vinny goes down and the goat is born.  Will the ATL game be the spark that this franchise has desperately needed? Could it be that they hit the mega million jackpot with Princley and Scourton as eat QBs for breakfast? Sure would be nice having 2 all-pro edge guys on the cheap for the next 4 years.  A lot of unknowns, but at least it actually feels  fun again.
