John Saunders 'parting shots' on Sports Reporters: Character Issues in NFL

While I agree 100% that Cam got WAY too much heat last year and before the draft and even to this very day, Saunder's argument is invalid IF guys like Tank Johnson, Pacman Jones, and Vrabel had issues...when they were young. If so, you can use the argument that once a problem always a problem. But I also 100% believe that kids like Newton and Mallet can easily grow up and become men with no flaws. Let's hope the latter happens for our guy.

Saunders is dead on. I think that was what was most dissappointing about this process. Watching adults and old people be so venemous towards these young kids that they knew very little about. For people to have already formed opinions and put these guys in a box already is ignorant. I think sometimes people either forget or dont care that these were student athletes and were not professionals.

uhh. most character concern guys drop in the draft but still get drafted. cam newton didn't even drop at all. Mallett dropped, sure, but he still got drafted and I personally think he had some football-related questions, too.

guys drop for character reasons but still get drafted (which is basically finding a job). Likewise, many NFL players drop for character reasons as pros (as in some teams trade them or won't touch them) but can usually find jobs.

certainly there are double standards between positions but I don't see that big of one between pros and college.

God knows I'm a completely different person than I was at 18. Urinating in public? Did it. DUI? Happened even before I turned 18, and I got away with drinking and driving more times than I care to think about, yet I'm not an alcoholic and wouldn't even dream of drinking and driving now. Smoking weed...did it many times when I was young and dumb. Stealing? Who here hasn't stolen something from work? Cheated on a test? Ditto, and I would be willing to bet that plenty of NFL football players either cheated or were graded with a wink and a big ole curve in college.

OF course, I have never been paid to play football, but I hear it happens a lot in the NFL...like 100% of the time, so who the hell cares?

"stealing" something from work... so you walked out with a coworkers computer, monstercat? haha

the thing is that Cam's grown since he did the poo he did, so that is why he got picked #1... not because the poo he did wasn't a big deal.

    • At the moment? Absolutely not. Maybe if they drop the next three in a row and go into the deadline at 3-6 I can see an argument to be made to move Rico as he's on a 1yr deal. I'd rather keep Chuba's contract though and roll with ETN + JB next season. The team will have plenty of time to see how JB is looking going into the offseason a year-plus after his surgery to know whether or not they need to plan for another direction.
    • I forgot to mention my thoughts on the rushing grade! 😮 He ran his ass off both weeks. I can't remember the stat offhand but didn't he have something crazy like 120+ yards after contact vs. Dallas? Against Miami he had lanes as wide as the entirety of I-95 to run through which is why his rushing grade wasn't as high as this week's. He's ran like a man possessed and going to earn himself some money in the offseason.
    • I'm not sure how much I'm changing mid year, especially when we are seeing some success.    Most Pass Rushers are physically gifted. Scheme and personnel help, but you gotta have the Jimmys and Joes, especially at that position.    We will likely lose games when the other team can throw for 400 yards, and has multiple high level receivers, but I think at this point in the development of our franchise, we have to be ok with that. You can't address every single issue at once. Really looks like we have plugged some holes on offense, and definitely in run defense. In the next draft, if we hit on a CB, an ILB and a Pass rusher, we will be pretty dangerous.
