Via Pod Cast: Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton says he shouldn't be faulted for not having long plays at Auburn. Plus, Newton says the offense he ran was not simple.

If he thinks running plays that were NUMBERED and consisted of looking for 1, maybe 2, WRs before pulling the ball down and running was/is not 'simple', wait until he cracks the cover of that new Panthers Playbook Rivera handed him just before the lockout resumed. :nonod:

I understand why people are concerned about the offense in which Newton played at Auburn, and I suppose it's easy to just assume he's going to have trouble digesting an NFL playbook.

But if Newton was that dominant relying on athleticism alone, consider what he might do if he does learn a playbook and is used to full effect by the coaches.

what's the kid supposed to say when these questions are thrown at him over and over again...? he's touched on this several times in the past already, we're just re-hashing the same thing

he says that it wasn't 'simple'... i'm sure that's in response to everyone saying he won't be able to grasp an NFL playbook. he's trying to quiet the doubters a bit, which isn't a terrible thing

everyone's seeing the Auburn plays as being simple and automatically turning that into a conclusion that Cam can't grasp anything else. if he was the AUTHOR of said playbook... then we'd have reason to worry. fortunately, he wasn't and to this point seems willing to dive into anything thrown his way and ready to put 100% effort into learning it. that's what should be taken away from all of this

we don't know how he'll grasp his new playbook until we see him using it... and to this point, is hasn't happened. everyone just needs to relax and give him a chance.

And the reason you're qualified to diagnose the "simplicity" of Auburns offense is....:rolleyes: So they had numbered calls to avoid using hand signals. So they ran the no huddle and it was the "quickest" way for them to do that.

Do you REALLY think the Panthers FO would draft a signal caller they were concerned about picking up the offense? Gotta love the offensive genius' that post here it's refreshing :dita:

Another example of something taken out of context. I knew that as soon as I heard the interview on Mike & Mike this morning that it was going to be picked apart by everyone.

He said that it wasn't simple in the fact that it gave defenses and DCs a headache. He readily admitted that the verbiage and the length of the plays at Auburn were simple.

He also said that he had the playbook right in front of him already, and that the verbiage of many of the plays in the book weren't as long as everyone had led him to believe.

Nice sensationalism in your post, though.

Seriously, if Newton gets good coaching and applies himself, he will be a franchise QB in 2 years time. Otherwise, Newton, Rivera, and Hurney will all be gone and we will be the Detroit Lions of the 2000's.

As a PSL Holder and diehard fan, I'm hopeful on for the 1st option.

Setfree, just about EVERY NFL ANALYST has pointed that out. It ain't news to anyone....except, it seems, Cam Newton. :p

Do YOU seriously think Carolina is NOT concerned about Newton's ability to pick up the offense and be a success? Do you need link to the interviews with Hurney where he said that was a major concern for him with the #1 pick but still believed Cam is worth the risk?! As one analyst stated, this whole success or failure of this draft for Carolina will come down to Cam Newton's success or failure. Yeah, that is enough to worry anyone who had anything to do with drafting him.

Good point - he couldn't very well say that Auburn simplified their offense for him, like numbering the plays for him. Even Newton admitted he has a lot of work to do, though.

Simple playcalling is a whole lot different than simple schemes, simple reads, and being labeled a "simple" offense altogether. I am not saying Malzahn's playbook wasn't somewhat "dumbed" down for Newton, but from what I have read the number system Auburn used for playcalling was to keep the offense moving fast & efficient moreso than Cam being unable to grasp the "lingo"
