Steve Smith reaches out to PFW to address trade rumors

I for one think we will be competitive this year. The defense will be good and if the offense has a good running game and the o-line produces, we could be decent. I am also waiting to see if we get a vet QB in free agency. I don't think we are done by a long shot. In fact the PSL conference call suggested we will sign our core and look to upgrade several positions including QB in FA. Who knows who will be available but I thinkwe will make a run at least one of them.

.... Smith was always classy about saying what he wanted and what he felt he could do on the field given the opportunity.

The true fans with attention spans longer than last season remember everything you've done.

Except some forget things like "Steve’s early-season breakthrough was accompanied by an ugly outburst when the Panthers refused to talk about a contract extension. When his agent told him that the team had characterized him as a “marginal receiver” during their talks that summer, he unleashed an obscenity-laced diatribe on the organization to a group of grateful reporters."

He also played through a quad pull, a left leg injury and a rolled ankle for much of the season but never mentioned it — not even to the training staff, until they could tell something was not right.

"They were like, 'What's going on? You're limping.' It just kind of spiraled from there," he said. "Did I lose a step? Anyone would lose a step when you're playing on one leg. I just tried to play through it, and ultimately I looked slow. Instead of 31 (years old), I looked 41. Instead of coming out and gathering myself and taking a backseat, I tried to play through it — and it backfired."

Found this interesting. Might explain why everyone thinks he's lost a step

Who would be a good replacement for Smitty?

A 4th rounder in 2012?

FA Randy Moss?

FA Terrell Owens?

FA Ocho Cinco?

Do you think that any of these "top talents" would have sat quietly and played the team fiddle while they went 2-14? I'd take SS any day over those guys, "whining" and all.

I'd be upset if he hadn't been mad as hell last year. I sure was.

The notion that Cam would be hurt by SS being on the team is laughable on it's face. Cam needs a sure handed vet receiver who knows how to get separation, how to fake the route and who CAN block. Smith excels in all these areas, and Cam needs that kind of talent on a raw team of first and second year players who couldn't pick up a blitz in a Panzer.

But Steel, he'll whine when he doesn't get the ball!?! :willy_nilly:

If :cam: is half the leader that RR is selling us, that won't be an issue. I've heard it time and time again, Winning solves EVERYTHING! And even the Cam haters have to agree that he is a Winner, because his record on the gridiron tells us so.

But please, hate on SS because no matter what you say, he'll prove you wrong.

Let me ask you guys something...

If Smith won the triple crown again or if he could do the unthinkable and get 2,000 yds in a season would he make the HOF?

looking at the other receivers in his "class," not even close.

    • Hello, soccer fans [crickets, tumbleweed flies by]. The World Cup kicks off in less than 2 weeks and, well, 🇺🇸USA USA USA🇺🇸 and all. We beat Senegal 3-2 yesterday in a tune-up friendly at BoA, with Christian Pulisic finally entering the scoring column.  How will we do in the World Cup once our tournament kicks off on the 12th? Well, there are 48 teams (assuming Iran is there) and it feels like one of two thing happens: we get grouped for the first time since '98, or we make it to the Round of 16 for the third time in the last four World Cups. I tried out the lottery for an Atlanta game and struck out, so yesterday was as World Cup as I'll get for in-person ($285/ticket for like Norway vs $39/ticket for USMNT right beforehand was a layup).  The U.S. has a travel-heavy schedule in group play, playing in LA, Seattle and LA. Real road warrior mentality being built. Glad the east coast gets worse kickoff times for a NA World Cup than a Qatar World Cup.
    • Well, that's the thing. Drafting players only for their physical measurables as you are suggesting only really happened during 2024, and X unfortunately has become the poster child for that. To be clear, it's not necessarily about drafting RAS over skill, but RAS over NFL-readiness and/or a solid body of work. Lots of players show skill in college, but those skills don't necessarily translate to the NFL for a multitude of reasons. But, getting back to the main point, to be clear, I believe that our FO is still enamored with physical gifts (who wouldn't be?), but now they're letting Dr. Eric Eager's proprietary system--his "secret sauce" prioritize the players that the Panthers draft, and it seems like it weighs not only a solid body of work, relative to a college career of course, but consistent gradual improvement as evidenced by production pretty highly.
    • Its a good article about how pathetically bad our past drafts ('23 and '24) have been. Building the team in '23 since we weren't ready yet and taking your qb in '24 made so much more sense in hindsight. Ladd McConkey over XL is pretty much a given but not sure it does as much to change Bryce's trajectory as the author suggests.  As bad as '23 and '24 drafts were, the '25 and '26 really give me hope.
