Jake Delhomme as a GM

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

Let's be clear up front. I'm not saying that we should consider Jake Delhomme for the GM position.

I'm saying that you could make an argument we already have him.

Here's a group of statements that you could make about Jake Delhomme that could apply just as easily to Marty Hurney:

- Capable of making moves that leave fans saying "How the heck did he pull that off?"

- Equally capable of making moves that cause fans to say "What the @&%$ was he thinking?"

- Known as much for character as for ability; very well-spoken in interviews and segments

- Seemingly teflon, always managing to escape the consequences of big mistakes

- Never one to place blame on anyone else but himself, even when the mistakes may not actually have been his

- Not flashy, not big money, but still willing to take risks and gamble

- Extremely loyal to the organization, and sees that loyalty rewarded

It almost makes it easier to understand why Hurney held on to Delhomme for longer than he should have.

When you look at the way they do their jobs and go about their business, they're essentially the same guy.

And?

And are you content with that?

I like Hurney, but I don't really see him ever becoming one of the great personnel men of the league. I think he'll always be good, but like Delhomme, the ceiling may stop there.

Jerry Richardson seems comfortable with that.

Are you?

well, we all know what eventually happened to Jake....eventually the INTs did catch up to him. I think Hurney's time could very well be coming......even if he hits on Cam (I think his other picks could prove to be costly).

If he hits on cam hurney will retire here.

hitting on guys in the 1st round has never impressed me.....

Hurney has always hit on guys int he 1st round....it is 2-7 where he falls apart. Teams are built in rounds 2-7.

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
