Cj Wilson at Nickel, you CAN'T be serious!

I think Lucas paid for the 10 yard back philosophy and Godfrey.

I mean, the guy's a decent player, its not like he woke up one day and didn't know how to cover anyone.

I have a lot of doubts about Godfrey. I know people are high on him on the staff; but, I don't see; but, I'm not coach. It just seemed like a lot of blown plays were him not being over the top of the CBs and LBs

Its just hard to tell when there is no pass rush, no man to man coverage, questionable execution by an inexperienced safety, and well, coaching, what more is there to be said about that, than has been said.

Maybe Godrey is our Roy Williams.

Godfrey was a rookie. Of course you can expect him to make mistakes i.e. blown coverage. What else was anyone expecting? Give him 2 more years and you may be eating those words.. Who in the NFL ever comes in their rookie year and never makes a single mistake?

As for Lucas, I trust the FO will handle that and are handling that. Hell, he may be back this year.

But someone asked how would Wilson come in and start with such little games under his belt? Well, bar any injury, he wouldn't start. So there you have it. Brilliant huh?

He would be plugged in as nickel and there you will find him gaining more experience just as any other CB would... How do you think most gain experience? I'm not really saying Wilson will be good or bad, we need to see more. But I fail to see any rational thought other than the sad attempt of saying, "well, he hasn't started, therefore he can't." I reply with, "no sh*t buddy, care to enlighten us on how to throw a pass next?"

For all those saying they read reports of Wilson not being very good, there are just as many saying they have read reports saying the staff likes Wilson... So....

with Wilson, as much as it must suck, ya might have to take the wait and see approach... Impossible you say? Not quite...

Let the FO do their job... =P

He played in 2007 also, he has more than 7 games under his belt, as well as preseason...He's not good, and i will be very upset if we salary dump Lucas moving this inexperienced corner into the field to get destroyed. Other than his contract year Lucas has been much better than Gamble, but thats an arguement for another day...I just dont want our best CB to leave without a good replacement, or good young guys moving up which other than Marshall i dont see on our roster..

In 2007 Wilson was a Safety, this past season was the first he played CB in the NFL. So I would expect there to be some growing pains.

As for how good he is, it's way too early to say, and none of us has seen enough of him to have a reasonable opinion. The times I saw him on the field (pre-season and his limited regular season) he looked to be a bit raw and still learning. There were times he played a receiver perfectly and looked like a legit CB, but there were other times in which he was out of position or bit on play action and looked a little lost. That's why this was a learning year for him, so I think we'll get a better idea of what he can be in camp.

Also, IIRC, I think the talk in the media came from what the team saw of him in practice, so he may be showing a lot more growth than any of us realize.

I'm not meaning to single you out r-p, I'm just responding to point out that the general opinion on Godfrey is based more on assumptions than fact. He was nowhere near as bad as some try to make it seem. In fact, he was pretty good overall. Sure he had his share of mistakes, but they were nowhere near as numerous as some think. In fact, much of the talk about his struggles has turned into somewhat of an urban myth.

What started as people blaming him for a specific blown coverage between Lucas and Marshall (which both admitted was their mistake, not Godfrey's)snowballed into a handful of people talking a lot about Godfrey playing poorly. And unfortunately, on the internet, when some people hear something enough, they start to believe it as fact. I guess it makes a certain kind of sense, though. After all, he was a rookie and Lucas was an established quality CB and Marshall had been deemed the next big thing by many fans. So when those two played so badly there had to be a reason, and Godfrey fit the bill as a convenient reason.

IMO, Godfrey's biggest fault was not in his mistakes, it was in his not making enough big plays. I knew there would be some mistakes, after all, he was a rookie that was changing positions. And he absolutely had them. But, IMO, he showed enough to feel that with a year under his belt and an entire off-season program, he'll be a fine FS for the Panthers.

Saying that Lucas is a better corner than Gamble immediately made the rest of your paragraph invisible.

This might be hard to grasp, or understand but the team apparently LOVES this kid and think he can one day be a STARTER... He's young, inexperienced and is learning a new system, but the team has big love for him. That's enough for me.

Yasinskas believes Marshall as #2 and Wilson as nickel is exactly what the team wants.

I figure if Meeks thinks this is the way to go he knows what he is doing. he hasn't been an insider with prefernces and loyalties to overcome. If he thinks after watching film that Marshall and Wilson are the guys, then he is probably right. If we don't resign Salley it will also show we are going in a different direction.

Hate to say it, but r-p is right. Godfrey really blew a lot of plays in coverage last season. I do not like Lucas very much, built you could tell he was frustrated by Godfrey's lack of help, as he was seen frequently yelling at Godfrey after giving up big plays. Godfrey is a good tackler and good against the run, but his pass defense skills were very suspect last season. The good thing is that he is young and can hopefully improve.

Im sorry "The Answer" but Lucas is a better corner than Gamble, and has been his whole career. The only year Gamble has been better than Lucas was his contract year, go figure. Gamble has up to this season gotten burnt plenty on deep balls, missed some of the most fundamental tackles, and is simply not the run stopper Lucas is. And thats based of observation not stats, because stats are for losers ( according to Fox) If one good year makes you better than someone who has outplayed you your whole career, than Derek Anderson is better than 95% of the QB's in the league..

    • It was both literally and figuratively a parade of horribles. 1)  Glut of coaching “talent” with designs that didn’t match the personnel and didn’t mesh with each other. 2) An o-line  I’ll-fitted for the scheme on the interior. Injuries compounded this critical weakness. Penetration on runs completely negated whatever zone dominance we tried to establish.  3) Lack of separation by the WR’s. A lack of speed and separation and filling the right roles led to some pretty embarrassing looks. We couldn’t win on multiple levels and it repeatedly trickled down. Also look to (2) because interior pass rush often limited the time for routes to develop. 4) Rookie qb with an average arm but degenerative mechanics. Those railing about arm strength are off. He can sling it with a solid base, and the time of release is plus. 5) as the season wore on, we saw more bailing on the pocket, more dancing, more tip toes . Which isn’t that weird given (1)-(3).    Finally, CJ had one of the best seasons ever for a rookie qb and we missed the pick. It has no bearing whatsoever on whether Bryce Young can be a successful NFL QB. I’ll say this: if the kid does rebound and proves himself, that’s the gamer you want leading your team.
