Amobe Okoye Anyone?

I think it is funny how other teams think when a player is cut there is an opportunity to pick up an unnoticed gem. I guarantee this cat is the equivalent of our Richard Marshall. Good players rarely get cut or released. This is why free agents rarely work out.

I actually agree with you. Free agency is overrated and generally speaking not a good return on investment.

Just my opinion but most players that are free agents are free agents for a reason.

Just read through the thread and jezuz christ it's a wonder how some of you dress yourselves in the morning. Nobody is saying we need to build a team full of free agents. You build through the draft. But you need to sign a few free agents to fill holes that you couldn't fill through the draft. And just because someone is cut does not automatically make them a bad player. That's one of the most dumbest things I've heard. A lot of you just want us to sign pro bowlers and that isn't going to happen. Okoye is still young and still has lots of potential. It's not like the Texans had any other help on the line as well besides Williams.

amobe is not a bad player is what i was getting to. he did have decent numbers last year 44 tackles 3 sacks. plus he is 24 years old.

Amobe is very weak as a run defender. He' pretty decent at pressure, but not enough to make him a solid starter. Lucas is a better player at his position than Amobe is at his.

That's a pretty sweeping generalization. What makes him expendable is not necessarily his performance but his SALARY. He was a top-10 pick, thus his salary is probably astronimical under the guidelines of the preceeding CBA. So, is he worth 6-8 mill a year? Probably not, but at the right price, he can be a valuable commodity for a team in need at the DT position.

And as for free agents not working out, see Charles Woodson, Julius Peppers, Ladainian Tomlinson, Michael Turner, Priest Holmes, T.O., etc. etc.

For every one you name that works there are 10 that don't work. When I saw this topic I had visions of other football forums sitting around posting the same topic about Richard Marshall. I am not saying that signing free agents is a bad thing, but normally players are cut and released for a reason.

You didn't say cut/released. You just said free agents - there's a big difference.

I think it goes without saying if I don't think free agent acquisitions usually work-out, then I definitely don't think signing players that are cut or released would have any higher probability of working out.

You are losing me and I am not sure if you are trying to make a point or just want to argue just to argue. Please tell me you are not arguing that players that are cut or released are more apt to be successful than free agents????

    • Biiiiiig eyeroll on this.  First, Look at historical stats of the most recent historical great DBs.  I plucked 3, Revis, Sherman, and Norman (cuzz he was our guy).  Combined post age 30, there are TWO pro bowls between those 3 and wanna get this...ZERO seasons with 16 games started.  ALL missed time.  It is RARE that Corners survive that long in the NFL and its about time we started recognizing this fact.  Jaycee is a good bet because it hasnt been anything seriously devastating injury wise, and with his sample size he could and should be an incredible piece for the panthers through age 30. Jaire kinda flops on the other side, hes 28...so hes under 30, but he wants his payday before it comes up, hes also been injury prone lately.  Bulk of the contract will be on opposite side of 30.  Will both of these guys help us be better in 2026?  SURE!  No doubt, but the question is, will these guys help us past 2026...not sure. The investment isnt worth the risk, nor would the ROI be anywhere close to worth it.  Neither guy is moving us from a 6-8 win team to a 8-10 team, period. My point is we're in this state a 6-8 win team IMO and he projects us as  a 4-6 win team.  EVEN if we think Jaire or Ramsey will make us a 6-8 win team, it in NO WAY is worth the money or capital to move that much just to suck kinda less.
    • I assumed he was retiring but apparently he plans on playing multiple more seasons.  Florida is gonna have trouble holding onto everyone.  Happens to all teams that have that much success.
    • I hate Marchand, but if he became a free agent.....
