War Panther - Cam to have a security blanket

I think it's more that those players we picked up from Auburn have talent to some degree. Remember we aren't the only team to grab players from Auburn last night and I'm sure more will go today, and as the OP said it helps Cam's transition, so it's a win-win situation.

I doubt bringing in some UDFAs from Auburn has anything to do with making Newton feel more comfortable as if we will be bringing in any of Auburn's playbook and running plays they already know. UIndrafted guys rarely make the squad and almost never start for the team as a rookie so their impact would be negligible.

What is likely is that when Rivera and his staff went to Auburn and hung out with the players while they were looking at Newton, they noticed other guys who they felt had good promise and would be worth a flyer if they were not drafted. They know these players better and fell comofrtable with them. These guys also come from a winning program led by a very good coach.

Personally, I would rather take the bandage off quickly and get Newton and Khalil as much time together as possible now.

I agree. I think Cam would benefit from learning but kind of hard to do when he is your entire investment from the draft at No. 1.

Not to discount the talents of the Auburn players we've picked up, but it seems the coaches have a very clear plan.

With no OTA's, Cam will most certainly need a pretty good ramp up period on the 2nd or even 3rd team (if we get a vet). What better way to smooth that learning curve for Newton than have the guy snapping the ball, the guy protecting your blindside and the guy running routes all be familiar to you?

A good plan if you ask me. Superb if one or two of these guys makes the roster.

So what your saying is the other players on Auburn's team were pretty good too.... I'm shocked

    • In all honesty, no one knows if Dan really pushed for Bryce to be drafted. It's not fair to Dan to say that just because he was a part of the Fitterer regime then he was in full support of drafting Bryce. If the HC, Reich at the time really wanted Stroud but got bullied into drafting Bryce then Dan had even less say so in the matter. Dan was also saddled with giving Bryce an opportunity to compete in years 2/3 because of the cost to trade up and get him by ownership.  Outside of managing the QB position, Dan has made good moves and built a decent roster. Solidified the O-line and D-line, drafted contributors, and made good trades (Mike Jackson), and free agent signings (Dowdle). I do believe that this offseason will be really important for Dan and we'll see whose side he is clearly on. Bryce has had plenty of time and opportunity to prove himself and he has failed, if Dan is a Bryce homer he'll give him another year and pick up the 5th year option. If Dan isn't a Bryce homer, he'll move on from Bryce. Either way, we'll find out this offseason.
    • You also have to extend him and probably deal/cut Bryce
    • Jones would be what he is if he was on this team, a fairly middle of the road game manager. Still and upgrade but probably not worth the price the 49ers may want for him. If it's not something stupid in terms of ask and he doesn't want something even more stupid in terms of longish term contract, I am okay with a middling game manager until we can do better through the draft. The one thing that wouldn't be terrible is some stability at QB. That has almost never happened under Tepper.
