The best thing I saw tonight:

Kevin Greene

Recommended Posts

I pointed this out in the game chat.

First thing I said when he called the timeout, "Fox would've let the clock run out."

Also another thing... Chud knows wtf he's doing. The screen pass to DLo for a big gain was the best setup HB Screen I have EVER seen in the history of our franchise.

That isn't blind homer talking, that's legit. I made a thread a couple years ago, may have, I think season before last, about how we have never run successful screen plays. I gave the Packers as an example back with Favre and Levens or Ahman Green. That screen tonight looked A LOT like that... Also, the double reverse made me chuckle, I like the TE seams on a great deal of the plays, but we knew that was coming, also I like the little wrinkles we've thrown in the traps with having a WR come behind it to fake a pitch to after the handoff.

Just way more aggressive, assertive, and creative... It's just the first preseason game, but RR and company are doing everything I expected in just these vanilla, non-specific planned plays.

I was watching with my friend who rarely watches football but has some general knowledge just from watching Panthers the last 5 years or so. Right when we held them on third he was like "why are we calling a timeout? Don't we usually just let the time go out so's not to risk a turnover." All i could do was smile. The poor thing has been foxwashed.

Disappointed with the 2nd timeout in the first half. Just completed a pass and got out of bounds in the one minute drill and couldn't get the play called and had to waste a timeout with the clock stopped.

That sort of mistake can cost you points.

lol did you guys see the clusterfug drive denver had that started at the dallas 7 with a minute left before half, and how undisciplined and uncoordinated they looked? they end up moving backwards because of penalties and getting a field goal. Good ol' foxball.

The best thing I saw last night was the tall girl with brownish/blondish hair and a smokin body in wet clothes (including some well designed khaki shorts/daisy dukes) standing in front of the Italian sausage stand on the upper level last night. :)

Football wise, I would say the most impressive thing were several well designed and successfully run screen plays. Haven't seen that from the Panthers offense in a while.

All good stuff ... I have a few more on and off the field.

1. Shockey - what a great teammate, not what I expected after some of the negative press. He was having a GREAT time on the sideline and was the first to rush onto the field, congratulating Edwards and any others that made big plays. Honestly, I don't recall seeing any of that last year and did not expect that from him.

2. Same as #1 for Cam. He was all over the bench getting folks pumped up. Even though he's a rook, he's already getting respect. Between series, he's taking snaps, making throws and looks like he cannot wait to get back on the field. My seats are fairly close to the Panthers bench and I haven't seen this energy in several years.

3. Fua and McClain may have been decent picks afterall. We didn't see the Giants OL on our linebackers for most of the night. Fua had two OL on him for several plays. McClain is athletic for such a big guy. I have no doubt we'll be better against the run. I'm looking forward to seeing CJ with the starters and whether we can get pressure with the front four. I don't see Fua doing much more than clogging running lanes, which is what he is supposed to do.

4. Mare's first two kickoffs were duds. He nailed the FGs though. It was strange not seeing #4 on the field.

5. There seemed to be a lot of pressure on Cam and Jimmy. I was waiting for Cam to take off downfield a few times but am glad he did not. He was disciplined for a young QB.

6. At the end of the game, Smith was checking out the crowd for kids. He pulled a couple Panther hats from the bags, appeared to sign them, and gave them to kids in the crowd. That's pretty typical for Steve. My son got his gloves after a game in Atlanta a few years back. I'm glad he is back.

It may take time for this team to gel but I liked what I saw on and off the field. Also, finally a pass play on third and long.

    • That's fine but for every Kurt Warner there are 10 Tony Banks that don't find their spot because....it never really existed.  Jake Browning was on and off practice squad teams for years until he stuck in Cincy. In his limited action over the past two seasons, he has played well enough that the Bengals panic traded for 41 year old Joe Flacco. It's easy to point to outliers like Warner or Purdy or Tom Brady as players who fell through the cracks because....well, they are outliers. The statistics over the long term have never really borne out the argument that every QB is just waiting for their perfect spot and situation. Most of these guys bounce around the league and it just never really clicks anywhere or they become marginal backup QB's. I don't think that exactly an accident. It's tough to be a starting NFL QB and it's why the hunt every offseason is so frantic. There are just so few that do it at a high level. My guess is that a theoretical market for Bryce Young(today) is going to look a lot like that post Chicago Justin Fields market. Not a lot of interest and a late round pick value at the highest. And a lot of that IS going to be his average to below average physical traits. It's extremely tough to be in that range and excel in the NFL. And it's precisely because you DO have to be closer to perfection to make up for the fact that you can't do a lot of the things that the elite to above average starters in this league do.
    • Im never not impressed by how confidently wrong you are. I've watched probably 200 NFL QBs play live. This talk about Bryce's arm strength is retarded, pure and simple. Bryce can make every throw an NFL QB needs to make in any circumstance. Does he have an arm that makes you go wow all the time? No, but very few QBs truly do. Bryce has plenty of zip on the ball when he wants. That TD to XL was a frozen rope. He throws to the opposite hash and outside all the time with no problem. Bryce's arm is objectively stronger than Cam's post-injury. I've seen both live multiple times and I know. And Cam could still play QB well without his rocket launcher. OPs point remains. QB success relies on a lot of nebulous things. Obviously you dont like Bryce. But his success is not going to be bc he doesn't have the arm strength. Its embarrassing this is a thing. Go to some games and actually educate yourself.
    • I personally think Bryce is going to be an extremely good Quarterback for a long time. If you look at modern QB development, it just takes a while. The extreme athletes can get by early, but if you look at the trajectories of guys the last 10 years, were seeing a lot of slow-cooking. Jared Goff, Geno Smith, Baker, Sam Darnold, Trevor Lawrence. The list is long.  The guys that were truly special from Day 1 is an extremely short list. The list of things that college quarterbacks are responsible for gets shorter by the day with the transfer portal, and the college offenses. The list of things that NFL Quarterbacks are responsible for seems to get longer and longer each season.  I saw an interview the other day in which a rookie quarterback and center were calling plays for the offense.  I can't remember the team or the Quarterback, but I definitely remember the clip. It takes time, even for the smartest and most gifted, and the reality is, we have no idea how good or bad the coaching may be until we hear things we aren't supposed to hear anyway.  Bryce isn't perfect, but I saw in another thread, his biggest struggle is risk/reward. That is something I only expect him to improve upon. His adjustments, ability to read a defense, and execution have been extremely good considering our rosters in his tenure here. Our offensive personnel and coaching were both so poor his rookie year that I'm not sure it's fair to properly evaluate that at all. Since that time, all we've seen from him is growth and progress.
