Person: Rivera To Name Starter Prior To 3rd Preseason Game

The quarterback order remained the same for the Panthers on Monday night, with Jimmy Clausen getting the first reps in team drills, followed by Cam Newton.

It figures to stay that way the rest of this week.

Carolina coach Ron Rivera said again he expects to name his starting quarterback next week before the Panthers' third preseason game at Cincinnati on Aug. 25.

Rivera said the game video of Saturday's 20-10 win over the Giants didn't change his assessment of what he saw from the top two quarterbacks. Both did some good things; both made some mistakes, and there were some mistakes from their offensive teammates that caused the quarterbacks to misfire at times.

“The thing that was really good about the way they played was it was right in line with the things we thought they were capable of doing,” Rivera said.

...

I assume this means the starter for the season opener. Also, Person is saying Clausen took first team reps, but Reed said Cam took most of them...

what about the 3rd and 4th preseason game? thought he would need to see them play more before making his decision.

Yeah, I don't understand the reasoning behind it.

You'd think they would make a decision after giving each an equal number of reps with the first team and after all 4 games in order to have a larger sample to make a decision off of.

the week 1 starter will need to get those 3rd game reps. Starters normally go until the 3rd. Whoever is gonna start the season will need all the reps they can get.

    • Well, that's the thing. Drafting players only for their physical measurables as you are suggesting only really happened during 2024, and X unfortunately has become the poster child for that. To be clear, it's not necessarily about drafting RAS over skill, but RAS over NFL-readiness and/or a solid body of work. Lots of players show skill in college, but those skills don't necessarily translate to the NFL for a multitude of reasons. But, getting back to the main point, to be clear, I believe that our FO is still enamored with physical gifts (who wouldn't be?), but now they're letting Dr. Eric Eager's proprietary system--his "secret sauce" prioritize the players that the Panthers draft, and it seems like it weighs not only a solid body of work, relative to a college career of course, but consistent gradual improvement as evidenced by production pretty highly.
    • Its a good article about how pathetically bad our past drafts ('23 and '24) have been. Building the team in '23 since we weren't ready yet and taking your qb in '24 made so much more sense in hindsight. Ladd McConkey over XL is pretty much a given but not sure it does as much to change Bryce's trajectory as the author suggests.  As bad as '23 and '24 drafts were, the '25 and '26 really give me hope.
