Rivera should hit the brakes on picking QB

Start Anderson until week 4 or so (unless we are 3-1 at that point), then bring in Cam.

Clausen is shell-shocked damaged goods here in Carolina...try dealing him to Buffalo, SF, or Indy (backup) that have QB issues for a third rounder or solid DT/CB.

Sorry, Rivera crossed that option out at tonight's post-game presser..it's Cam or Jimmy..and although we have some who seem to think Jimmy could run a vertical stretching offense, to me he just doesn't seem physically or even mentally capable of doing so.

Didn't mean to pie you *doh*

Who is lying? Rivera? And Clausen isn't so far ahead of Cam. And seeing that is has been as close as it has been, then when you figure that Cam is the worst he will ever be and neck and neck with Jimmy I think you can very easily make the decision to go with Cam.

What makes you think this is Cam at his worst?

If you think that Cam Newton looked more comfortable and in sync with the offense over Jimmy you are about as smart as the grass they play on. Cam is a great college football quarter back as far as NFL no Jimmy is a more pro style friendly and BETTER quarterback than Cam can ever be in the NFL. Jimmy will be the starter and its not sad, just because he didn't go number one overall doesn't mean he cant be a solid player. do you need any examples for good players who didn't got number one, Kurt Warner, Terrel Owens, Tom Brady a sixth round draft pick who has won four Super Bowls, so shut up about how Jesus like Cam Newton is and actually watch both quarterbacks with the intent to support your panthers.

This is going to be fun.

The fact that he is the QB of the future is exactly why you don't rush him. You run the risk of ruining a player by putting him in as a rookie too early.

The moment his footwork is brought up to NFL caliber we insert him, but putting him in before that can make it worse.

What is NFL caliber?? Like u folks are serious winners..

First Cam had to get his intellect up to NFL caliber. Now his footwork needs to NFL caliber. I really wonder if Cam will ever be up to NFL caliber in the eyes of some of u.

At least the gods of the NFL QBs, Peyton and Tom, were allowed to have some weakness. But not someone like Cam.

Jimmy has looked better than Cam so far in the pre-season.

Has he outshined Cam a ton? No.

Jimmy is simply better than Cam at this point. Cam is possibly going to be great one day, but why stick him into the starter role from the get go? Clausen is playing well and moving the ball, let him have his shot and make Cam earn it.

One of you Cam nut-huggers (I think it was rico) suggested starting Cam and pulling him if he can't cope. Yeah, that is just an awesome way to totally fug up a young QB. Cam NEEDS to be ready, 100%, before you throw him out there.

Cam has played well so far, there is no reason to possibly make him regress by just straight throwing him to the wolves.

If I remember correctly, Clausen didn't light it up last pre-season, but he did play respectably.

Um, what?

I stopped reading at "Tom Brady won four Super Bowls", and I'm pretty sure that was about seven lines too late.

I agree with the notion that we need to pick a starter ASAP in order to be as prepared as possible going into the season opener.

I would like for it to be Cam, as Cam obviously is the more talented and more threatening QB to a defense, but I could understand easing him in still...

I really want him to start from day 1 and take his lumps, but I don't want him shellshocked either... I think it's very possible that he missed on some plays tonight because of pressure and therefore he didn't progress through his reads - but I couldn't see the whole field so that's just a guess from how things looked.

Clausen looked fairly good from what I saw, and I have to say, I'm proud of him... He has definitely progressed since last year and is taking more chances... But, he is still checking down a lot and seems to throw blindly when he feels pressure. That isn't a good habit to have, but still, he is much better than last year and I actually see some potential in him now.

I think both QBs performed fairly evenly, but the edge goes to Cam for what he can bring to the table in terms of ability, athleticism, potential, and for being a threat in the passing AND running game.

FYI....Clausen is suppose to out play Cam. He is more "pro style friendly and a better QB." Cam is suppose to be not so intelligent and coming from a one ready system. Why isn't Clausen running away with this contest? Even if Jimmy does get picked to start first day, he hasn't proven to be that much better than the kid who everyone in the media seems to enjoy undermining with a whole lot of "sky is going to fall if u pick him first" senarios.

    • I have been looking for a dropped pass list and all that comes up is QBs. And team stats. When I do receivers I get the passing stats for a handful that threw passes this year.    I wanted to be accurate but anyhow I was looking because thought I remembered reading where T Mac had more drops than XL this year.  One of you many smarter than me people here,I would appreciate it if you know how to pull that up, please do. Thank you.    And yeah I know that isn’t all there is to it I just thought it was interesting.  Of course what the hell is a drop lol.
    • I agree with this and I think it's worth mentioning too that Bryce is not consistent on his placement and especially velocity and that in large part is driven by his footwork. We all know XL doesn't have the best hands and I don't know that he can overcome that. Cam always had the heater that just hit your hands and sank into your grip, where Bryce has some that are harder thrown, some soft. Bryce stepping into a pass looks so much different than that hop throw thing he does. I think XL really needs to hit the jugs machine and start learning how to catch all these different touch passes. TMac and Coker don't have these issues. If XL doesn't get some work in he's going to be out of the league in the next couple of years.
    • I think most people like XL from a personal standpoint. I don't think he's stupid either. Although if we are being realistic he is lacking in football IQ at this point in time and it cannot be disputed that he has not taken working on his craft seriously at all times given the body of work on the field. It speaks for itself. I myself have defended him at times given the circumstances of our QB room. But he is now in his third year and 25 years old. We are not in a position as a franchise to go around babying anyone especially first round draft picks. He needs to take his position and his football career seriously or he is going to end up selling used cars somewhere. I hope he realizes this and takes an extended break from social media because that mess certainly isn't going to increase his net worth if he ends up out of the league. And these hanger on types will disappear quick too once that money dries up and it surely will eventually. We'll see how he responds.
