Newton starter vs Bengals, Week 1 starter TBD

To compare Cam's performance to MM's was absurd to begin with. Matt Moore has been a starter in the NFL in the past, AND has been in the league for how many years? So comparing what he did against 2nd and 3rd stringers (in some positions 4th and 5th stringers) against what a rookie did against the 6th best defense in the NFL in his first start as a rookie is logical to whom? That's just stupid.

Did Matt Moore look like the same QB he is now, last year, or when he was moved to starter after Jake's injury in 09 back when he filled in as starter as a rookie in 2007. Even in 2007, Matt threw 3 INTs as a starter before he ever threw a TD. He DID show more consistent accuracy in the preseason, but again, he wasn't getting reps against starting defenses, so what does that mean? Nothing.

Cam is a rookie. Being a rookie, we should expect imperfections. We should expect ups and downs. We should expect awesome plays and some bad ones in between. But, the guy brings a lot more good than bad and potential for incredible plays that most QBs can't make due to his physical abilities, both in passing and running. So, wading through the bad to get to the good will be well worth it.

To play against the 6th ranked defense in the NFL, with possibly the best DB group in the league, and complete 50% of his throws without any turnovers in his first start is a good outing in my book. Not where we want him to be in the long-haul, but that's the first step to it. Anyone that ignores that is clearly "just hating."

So, people can keep hating and waiting for him to fail, but I don't want to hear nan when he is winning games this year and eventually leading us to perennial playoff appearances and success year in and year out.

A lot of his problems and inconsistencies right now can only be resolved through reps and live game action, so he needs the 3 quarters come Thursday. If it was up to me, MM would've been re-signed and he could go into the season starting while Cam was worked in throughout games in specific plays and packages so we could ease him in. But, we don't have MM on our roster, we have Clausen, Anderson, and Pike outside of Cam... With those options, there isn't any reason that Cam should be sitting on the bench come 9/11.

And again, as a side note, it has become apparent that many people on this board completely ignore how costly turnovers are for a QB.

3 Wins and 28 INTs = Best rookie QB ever???

...did you watch him play? he may not have had the best season ever as far as wins/losses go, but he was the most impressive rookie I've seen in many ways... he set many, many records at the time too if you want to go by stats, but either way, yes, he had one of the best rookie seasons ever.

edit: I don't see how saying that Cam didn't look good is hating just because he played the Dolphins. It's reality. He didn't look good. There are plenty of excuses for it, but he's going to hopefully play better. I don't think Cam looked TERRIBLE, but I think it's fair to look at his performance and say he didn't impress...

Glad we're being all fair and balanced to first time starting QBs here at the Panthers.

Cam Newton has done something in 4 quarters that Clausen didn't do one time all of last year.

Show glimpses of something to get excited about. Maybe they don't happen as much as you would like. But last season it never happened.

Not saying Jimmy cannot turn into a good QB. Just that he didn't show any evidence of that last year.

I don't know things like who was open down field etc... I have no access to the routes the receivers were running down field because very few camera angles gave us access to that.

based on what I DID see, it looked like Moore played very well, and Jimmy and Cam not as well.

But it's still a bit flawed... fun to discuss, but hard to really say too much about it.

they did run the ball with cam early... but when your quarterback isn't completing passes and the couple run plays you had don't go anywhere, you end up in 3rd and longs. Then you end up down, and once you're down...

they did run on the first couple drives and the offense still was ineffective, so I don't think that was really what was up.

DLo ran 3 times for 6 yards. Oh, and Cam threw for a 1st down on the first drive, so he had nothing to do with the lack of ran success.

I wouldn't have picked any QB in this draft.

Hurney has picked 4 QBs in 2 years.

One is a wr one was a 6th round flier pick and 2 are battleing for the starting job.

So again who would have been the starting cailber QB you said in another post if you didn't go QB this year?

    • As I've said numerous times the last few days, having Thielen on the field has literally 0% to do with my views on this (I've even said I think Renfrow is going to take a ton of snaps from Thielen anyways).  He has more value to this team without playing a single snap than a 2026 5th round draft pick does for the franchise.   His value is helping set up T-Mac, XL, Coker, and Horn for long term success by helping them learn how to be pros, how to go about their business, how to train, how to do all the little things that helped turn Thielen from a D2 undrafted player into a borderline Vikings legend.
    • He only wants to be traded because it's the Vikings who are calling. If he didn't want to be here, he could have retired, instead he took a pay raise to come back for another season.  I get it, it's an opportunity that he'd like to take, but we shouldn't cut off our nose to spite our face because he now wants to jump at this opportunity less than two weeks before the season starts. I'm not against trading him, I'm just against trading him for a return that doesn't help our team as much as having him on the roster would.  I'll put it this way, if a 5th is the best we can get for him from the Vikings and he's now dug in on not wanting to stay this year, I'm saying screw you and trading him to any of the other 30 teams besides the Vikings for the best offer we can get. He was perfectly happy here a week ago, if the Vikings soured him on that and then want to get him for peanuts, then screw them both.
    • Yes and no, he wants to go back and his wife most definitely wants to go back. He took a bunch of team mates to Minny and has worked out with JJ two offseasons in a row. It's where both him and his wife are from.    The money was basically a please come back and help Bryce. Pretty please...here's some more money.    Now he's agreed to a paycut to go back to the Vikings.
