Other Teams Cuts

Once again, Panthers fans showing their ignorance. I still haven't recieved a comment that specifies how signing Gholston would actually hurt the Panthers. Apparently Panther fans are ok with the mediocracy of our defensive ends right now in Malcolm Tatum, Ugo Chinasa, and Thomas Keiser.

Nothing dispels the taunts of "y'all are ignorant!" more than "hey, he was decent in college and has huge muscles, let's sign him!"

This is the last thing I am going to say on the Vernon Gholston subject. I will divide it into five parts.

1). Let's use the circular reasoning that is seen on the Huddle so often. "If (insert player) sucked on (insert team), then (insert player) must suck on (insert different team)." This would be a common misconception that many fans try to convey. However, there are plenty of players that were just not suited for many teams and Vernon Gholston may just be one of them.

2). Many of you act like the Panthers are going into your own bank account, taking out your life savings and then throwing at a certain player. Well news flash for you, this is Richardson's money and he has plenty of it, so calm down.

3). All of you act like Vernon Gholston is going to put us in debt. I can assure you that a guy would rather take a pay cut and play in the NFL then make minimum wage at the local Dairy Queen.

4). Gholston has shown capability (albeit at the college level), but nonetheless; a player that was picked sixth overall should have the edge on any undrafted player. Now this isn't always the case, cause we have had great players like Antonio Gates, James Harrison, and London Fletcher who were all undrafted and are all still having great careers. However, more times than not, the player picked in the first round will be better than the player that was not picked at all.

5). Have you seen are defensive end's? Charles Johnson and Greg Hardy are the only guys who have shown promise so far. Eric Norwood and Everette Brown are suitable backups, but is everyone here seriously ok with Chinasa, Tatum, or Keiser being the 5th option over a guy like Gholston who would come at the same price? I sure hope not.

You completely neglected that fact that his performance in the NFL has sucked to the nth degree.

He was not a premier college player....he was a workout wonder at the combine. People got enomored by his measurables. Too bad his play has NEVER come close to living up to them.

He is terrible....enough said.

I respectfully disagree. Yes, there are cases where a player may rise up from the practice squad like Harrison, or who may just simply be out of position when they think he should be a 3-4 OLB but he is better suited as a 4-3 DE, but Gholston got moved to various positions on the Jets and failed at all of them. He then went to the Bears where he was cut in a matter of weeks, and was beaten out of playing time by practice squad guys. These are teams that, historically, put together good defenses and have great defensive minds at HC or DC.

The grass is always greener and I wouldn't want a single rep to be taken away from Norwood to be given to Gholston. Just like when people knock Cam and say that being bigger, stronger, and faster doesn't mean you will do well at the NFL level for QB, the same applies tenfold to playing DE.

As for Everette Brown being a serviceable backup, this, to me, is laughable. I can't think of a single down & distance situation where I'd say, "this is perfect E. Brown time, baby". He's our Gholston, and is every bit the bust, and was just paid less.
