Rush-to-Judgment after Week One

William is not ineffective. Stop that mess. I still think he's the better, smarter and faster of the two. Our run game and O line just sucked this past week.

That made Stewart look a bit better, because he's a little more bulky and was able to push through better. But he's no power runner either. If we fix our O-line play though, Williams will be just fine.

We've always known Williams needed help from the O-line and good blocking so he can bounce it outside. That's just the type of RB he is. I have no idea why we were running him up the middle so much.

In all actuality they both ran well Sunday..We just didn't run the ball a lot.

tough yardage and pass protection.....Stewart is just better. With a rookie QB (not to mention a running one)......where are in for a season of needed pass protection and a runner who can muscle through defenders.

hmmm...i thought williams was supposed to be the houdini who could make something out of nothing.

so now he needs good online play, and stewart doesn't?

Not on person in this thread has said he is ineffective. Have said Stewart looks to deserve more reps, likely is better at this point in there careers overall, is younger, Stewart's strengths might fit what the offense will face this year, and Williams' cash would have been better served elsewhere.

So tell me, at what point in there careers do you think Stewart will be a better RB than Williams. When Williams is 31? You think by then Stewart will finally be a better overall RB for a team?

RBs generally have short windows....and Williams came on late. Which makes his window of being a beast much smaller than most guys around the league.

Stewart not a power runner? Stewart is a power runner.....with speed and agility

That's not the point man. The point is our running game just isn't effective enough to feed both of these guys and I highly doubt this will change going forward this season with this O-line. Someone said it's unlikely anyone would take Williams's contract, so the obvious choice would be to trade Stewart. If you can find someone to take Williams, fine, trade Williams. I don't care.

But I don't think being left with Williams and Goodson would be of any serious blow to our team right now, considering how badly we need to patch up the O. I'm just saying if we're stuck with just Williams, we would be fine. And as of right now I still think he's the better, faster more experienced back.

Put it to you this way, if we can fix the O-line, no matter who we decide to keep will give us better run production.

But you can't talk about the run game, and only mention Stewart or Williams, and not the O-line because the problems with the run game goes hand in hand with that. Our run game sucking has little to do with Williams slipping and us needing to use Stewart more because he's the better guy. If that's where ya'll are going with this, count me out!

Yes, he needs to play some online Madden.;)

Again, I don't care to talk about Stewart vs Williams too much because I sincerely do not believe adjusting the number of plays from one guy to the other is going to do anything major for this run game as long as our opponent's D's keep getting penetration, and push our line back on run plays. O-line being fixed is for our whole team, not just for Williams. Stewart needs it too, Goodson needs it too, our QB needs it too.

But if I had to make a choice, I'd still take the more limber Williams just because he can bounce outside and out of the way of the on-coming onslaught quicker than Stewart.

Point is Chud isn't Fox. Now he does like the pound the rock but he isn't offense when ideally working isn't going to produce 2 1100 yard rushers.

again, the only thing crazier than paying Williams at 28 that money would be trading away your 24 yr old stud RB.

Problem w/ having Williams and Goodson as your backs....is Goodson can't even pretend to pass block and Williams just isn't very good at it.

Stewart is the 1 RB Carolina absolutely needs.

DeAngleo was and is simply an expensive luxury. Carolina likely will pay the price for that....if not this season...soon.

I agree, it won't do anything MAJOR for the run game. But Stewart helps our pass game more than Williams.....simply b/c he can hold and pick up blocks better.

There isn't much to fix in regards to the OL. Mostly a numbers game. Can't do anything about that except force opponetns to change the bodies they are sending and where they are sending them.

That's fine but, again, it's in hindsight. Can't undo the contract.

I'm just honestly curious if we would have a buyer on either one before the trade deadline. And if we do, I think we should take it. Either for an O-line trade +cash, or use the money to get us an O man from somewhere else.

Yeah we can,. We can get bigger, ideally younger, less injury prone guys to replace a couple of ours.

i think that is debatable. Jake's extension wasn't bad in hindsight...it was just bad. DeAngelo was a luxury move this offseason and the team new ahead of time that with all the holes we had.....we were still fine at RB without him.

Defiantely there would be buyers for Stewart....but Carolina wouldn't part with him. That would be insane. DeAngleo is untradable with his contract IMO.

    • I had started typing my post hours ago and didn’t finish it and just came back to finish it, posted it, then saw yours and saw we were pretty much saying the same thing - even the games that stick out to us most.  I don’t think a lot of people remember that SF playoff game, but I felt like I had just got mugged in broad daylight.  I remember them calling Mitchell for unnecessary roughness, and then I remember watching Boldin take a super late cheap shot, dead in front of the ref and then showing him watching the whole thing in replay…  the refs let them have a fuging field day and didn’t do jack poo, but if we so much as breathed the wrong way it was fuging 15 yards.  Each team playing under two completely different sets of rules.  poo hurt.  I was enraged.  I’ve never went back to watch either that game or SB50 and never will.  fuging robbery.
    • I’ve said it a million times since, but it’s impossible to keep them from affecting the game.  In SB50, they literally took the game from us, and they did it early.  Cotchery’s no-catch?  The miraculous amount of times we converted for a first down only to have it suddenly called back make it a 3rd down and 15+ against the best defense in the league that specialized in rushing the passer and man coverage on the back end?  And you do that enough times, you kill the morale and confidence of the team you’re doing it against.  It’s telling the one team “you can do whatever with impunity” and the other “you can’t do whatever they’re allowed to do.”  It changes the aggression level.  It essentially neuters one team and allows the other to do whatever the fug they want.  Imagine you call the police for help and they get there and tell you to sit still while the other party beats the poo out of you and you can’t defend yourself.  That’s what the officials do.  There is no way to avoid them affecting the game.  And more often than not, it’s the most subjective calls they use to do so.  Even in SB50…  you saw the Broncos commit more egregious penalties than anything we did, and barely any of it was called.  Their OL was holding all fuging game and the refs did nothing.  We already had our work cut out for us against two future HOF edge rushers and the refs played to their advantage with that.  From what I remember, both Oher and Remmers were called for holding at various times and their hands were in the INSIDE of the defender.  It was garbage, but all by design. Also, if there is any video of it anywhere, go look at what the refs did against us back in 2013 against SF.  The fix was in there too.  They stepped in early and often and ensured we knew we were not allowed to play with the same aggression or intensity SF was.  It was disgusting as well. at this point, I hope Vince McMahon, errr, I mean Goodell just finally scripts us to win it, because this poo is not won via competition or off merit.
    • You can go back to the New York Knicks somehow getting Patrick Ewing.  I saw a story where they place the New York Knick card in the freezer right before the drawing.  It was simple.  Show everyone the cards are undetectable to the human eye.  All they had to do was grab the coldest card. IMO ever since Goodell took over the NFL it has been fishy.  Patriots winning the SB after 9/11, New Orleans after Katrina and Peyton Manning's going away gift against us. The terrible calls during that game were blatantly one sided.  New England should have been stripped of their first 3 SB when they were caught spying on the other team in their SB wins.  I think the evidence against the Patriots was so damning Goodell felt it could ruin football and they brushed it under the table.   In the 2004 SB, How did we go from practically no yards in the first Quarter to setting a record in the 3rd Qtr.  Dan Henning changes the game plan.  IMO probably the greatest half time adjustment of all time.
