Steve Smith in HOF?

I think everyone here can agree watching steve smith grow as a player and person has been amazing. There's been bumps in the road but all and all I'd say he's turned out pretty good just to be a 3rd round kick returner;)

I'm sure a lot of you watched his interview with Sharpe where steve got emotional when the subject switched to him one day being in the HOF. http://www.nfl.com/videos?videoId=09000d5d80d4929b. But I got to wondering if Steve will have the numbers to get in?

-- yrs pro - catches - yds - tds - Pro Bowls/ All Pro

Steve Smith - 8 - 509 - 7,348- 45 - 4/2

Chad J. - 8 - 612 - 8905 - 53 - 5/2

Larry F. - 5 - 426 - 5975 - 46 - 3/1

Reggie W. -8 - 576 - 8129 - 53 - 3/1

Anquan B. - 6 - 502 - 6496 - 40 - 3/0?

Andre J. - 6 - 486 - 6379 - 33 - 3/2

Some old Farts

Terrel Owens - 13 - 951 - 14,122 - 139 - 6/6

Randy Moss - 11 - 843 - 13,201 - 135 - 6/4

Marvin H. - 13 - 1102 - 14,580 - 128 - 8/8

Hines Ward - 11 - 800 - 9780 - 72 - 4/3

For the record I do not feel Ward belongs on this list. But with the Steelers huge market and his two superbowls who knows.

As for Steve he came into the league at a disadvantage being mainly a kick returner (only 154 rec yds his first year) and being a part of one of the worst teams ever. Not to mention in 04 when only playing half a game of the season. 06 and 07 were waste of him in the prime of his career. 06 horrid O-line, no legit no 2 receiver and 3rd and Draw Dan Henning calling the shots.

07 Jake goes out after 3 games =p. He still managed to get 1000 yards though. He's only really had 6 seasons as a receiver with a run based offense.

As for the playoffs I couldn't find all the stats but I'm sure he's ahead of most. 404 postseason yards in 03. That ass beating he gave giants and bears in 05.

I think the cut off for this current generation of receivers is going to be high. I hope he gets some more 1500 yd seasons, its gonna be close:confused:

Any thoughts on his chances or how the HOF works?

*If* he stays healthy and *if* he continues to put up amazing numbers for another few years, he *could* make the Hall. He's the only Panther that's going to be close to making it though. Well, you could say that Beason has the talent, but it's ridiculously early to start suggesting that he's Hall-worthy.

We've discussed this a few times, however all of the old threads were lost when the forum crashed.

I think the general consensus is he's got to have a few more really great seasons in order to make it. Looking at Smith as an individual athlete and not a Panther, it's sort of a shame he wasn't in an offense that would have better utilized his talents.

Don't get me wrong: I want Smith to be a Panther for life. But imagine what he could do in another system with perhaps another quarterback.

Lynn Swann was a punt Returner

With all the retired WR's waiting to get into HOF

I think a WR has to do more than numbers,He has to have the numbers,

But numbers alone want do it .

Playoffs & Super Bowls will play a big part .

And having the ability to take over in those games

That's what the nominating committee will remember first .

From a talent standpoint, Steve Smith is definitely a HOF receiver. Unfortunately, he probably won't have the necessary stats by the end of his career. As mentioned, his uneventful first two seasons, and the broken leg in '04 hurt his stats. If the Panthers win a couple of Super Bowls while Steve Smith is still a big contributor, then he'll have more of a case. If he were in a pass first offense, such as the Pats, I have no doubt his numbers would be HOF worthy.

Too true, also he has always been under a conservative offense.

If Jake and Fox leave sooner than later, he will have a better shot

That's completely false and unrelated. Fox has NEVER been opposed to going to Smith deep.

    • I just dont get the worry over losing a practice squad player that just went undrafted. Everyone just made their selections. The chances of a team wanting to sign him to an active roster after not selecting him is very low.  If that interested they would have taken him late to evaluate in person. As far as I can tell two qbs were signed off another teams practice squad last season and they were both going in to their 5th season.
    • I enjoyed reading this thread and the usual banter that follows. The only silver lining I can identify right now is we do actually have a couple of young QB's behind him and we do have a nice roster on both sides of the ball built around the most important position. So if the team overall shows some promise but we still falter largely due to a lack of consistent passing output (again) hopefully the decision makers can be free to make the best decision for the team going forward after the conclusion of this upcoming season.
    • I don't really follow the team anymore due to a variety of reasons and consequently have largely stopped posting but I agree that this is a lovely website and community. This forum probably kept me around for years longer than I would've stuck otherwise because of how difficult it was to stop checking multiple times a day. Especially appreciate how lax the moderation tends to be compared to a lot of places, the crew here does a great job. Out of curiousity I decided to try making a new account (solely for testing purposes) to see what exactly is wrong with the sign up process. The issue seems to be that it never sends you an account verification email, thus making it impossible to complete registration. This is likely something to do with the email server upstream, hope it gets fixed. Also, lol
