Game Notes - Week Two

good write up as usual, but a couple things i'd like to point out.

this should get sorted out in time. one thing about newton at auburn is that they had a lot of 2nd half and 4th quarter comebacks. it took a few weeks for him to find his groove, though. one of the things that impressed me a lot about him was his ability to bring his team back from behind. the game against alabama is the biggest example, but it wasn't nearly the only one.

i'm not sure what attitude problems you were expecting to or thought you might see, but those things you are noticing presently aren't unique to this year. the only ones who criticized his attitude were pundits who took the lazy approach and didn't bother actually investigating and talking with coaches and teammates and others close to the situation.

it has always been about the win for him. i'm glad you are turning in your perception of him, but his attitude (esp. on game day) and leadership on the field was a major part of why he was regarded so highly. his attitude and personality meshed well with what what rivera was wanting here.

I expect the conditioning to take care of itself over time. Won't be shocked if he hits the proverbial "rookie wall" at some point, though.

As far as the attitude, I don't know that I'd say I expected problems, but I was worried about the possibility of them (same thing with Clausen last year). There's a reeeeealy fine line between confidence and cockiness. Happy to see Newton landing on the right side of it.

I worry a lot less about that sort of thing at every position these days though, for one big reason...

I don't think he's ever met an attitude he couldn't adjust.

Felton was in the game on our first drive when we tried to run the ball down in the red zone with Stew.

Check out the below video for the results.

Kalil got trucked badly on that play :(

Felton whiffed a bit on his block, but he wasn't the only one. Wouldn't have mattered really because they got to Stewart from his right.

In regards to Newton, does anyone else think that sometimes he really wants to run, but hesitates and decides to throw it instead? There was one particular play against GB where Newton rolled out to the right to avoid pressure, there was a huge lane, Newton took 1 step like he was ready to take off, then decided against it and threw the ball downfield. Don't remember if the pass was a completion or not.

Nice write up.

After 2 games, I have 1 big concern on each side of the ball.

Offense:

Red-zone play calling and execution, especially in the GB game. There is no excuse for what happened on 3 separate drives Sunday. 3 times we got the ball inside the 10 yard line, yet only came away with 6 points on the 3 drives. You can't put it solely on the players or coaches. It was a combination.

Defense:

Big plays. In both games we gave up TDs on HUGE plays. In the Arizona game, a 40+ yard TD and a 70+ yard TD. This past Sunday, 40+ yard TD and an 80+ yard TD. Outside of those 4 plays, the defense has looked good.

Both of these problems I think are evidence of a young team implementing a new system on each side of the ball. But if this becomes a consistent occurrence, wins will be very hard to come by, no matter how many yards Cam puts up.
