Defense Predictions vs. Jacksonville

Gamble will shut down whoever he is covering. He held Fitzgerald to just 3 catches in game 1, his name wasn't called on giving up many catches in game 2. I believe Gamble will make the no name jacksonville #1 receiver even less knowable, as whoever Gamble covers will have minimal catches. I also believe Gamble comes up with a big play.

Gamble's predicted stats: 1 INT, 3 Tackles.

Charles Johnson has had one sack per game, and has been consistent with pressuring the QB thus far. With an inexperienced Gabbert, who is known to have happy feet, he will play a big role Sunday.

CJ's predicted stats: 2 sacks, 4 tackles, 1 for a loss.

Greg Hardy will have a field day as well against Gabbert, rushing against the weak side, I believe he will have an equal chance to make big plays, and due to double teams against CJ, he could have a better game, however going off of pure reason, I'm going to have to keep things somewhat reasonable.

Greg Hardy's predicted stats: 1 sack, 2 tackles.

Captain Munnerlyn, regardless of the knock on this kid, he's a player. I don't believe he will be a huge playmaker in this game, but I believe he plays a key role in defending the pass. I say he has more tackles than Gamble, because he will have to make up for the presence that Godfrey had over the top.

Captain Munnerlyn's predicted stats: 4 tackles.

Dan Connor will play a key role against MJD. He's a hard hitting LB that has a nose for the ball and plays down hill. He could easily start on 25+ teams if we didn't have Beason (which we currently don't). Jacksonville will be leaning heavily on the run. He has a solid game as damage control between the tackles.

Dan Connor's predicted stats: 7 tackles, 2 for a loss.

Sherrod Martin is my pick this game to take control and lead the defense. He's got raw ball hawking ability, and he has improved every year. He will come up with a few big plays, and he will have to chase down any run broken off by MJD. He contributes to forcing Jacksonville's offense off the field.

Sherrod Martin's predicted stats: 1 INT, 4 tackles.

My wild card is Jordan Pugh, being placed back at Safety (his normal position). He will have a few hiccups, but I believe he has the opportunity to make a few big plays. His statistics are a toss up, but I believe he comes through as a solid backup this game. He's no Charles Godfrey, but he will be alright as a temporary plug in.

Jordan Pugh's predicted stats: 4 tackles.

In conclusion, we will have to focus majority of our energy on stopping the run and forcing Gabbert to win against us in a shoot out. We already know Cam's maturity level is far better than we ever expected it to be at this point. If we need to, Cam will defeat Gabbert through the air. But, that's doubtful as I see us trying to establish the run in this game. Anyways, Rivera and company will try and place the game on Gabberts shoulders and we may possibly play the game: "My rookie is better than your rookie". Sunday will be fun.

Overall statistics:

Defense holds Gabbert to 11/19 112 yards, 2 picks.

MJD has a 105 yard game, 1 TD.

Panthers win 24 - 13.

Depends on how many times Jax feeds MJD. Which should be a lot. I don't see 10, but anything's possible. Dan is quite the player.

I think we're gonna see the emergence of a great linebacker in Connor this season. I have high hopes for him and think our defense is going to become surprisingly stronger by mid-season. With Beason and Davis gone, this is giving our backups at the positions we're the best at a shot and I think we're still gonna be very solid even with just Connor, Anderson, Williams, & Gaither

And no doubt the jags are gonna be trying to run but I won't be surprised if they try a few play action bombs early to test our D and Gabbert

Thats a lot of sacks Ivan. That would mean we get to gabbert quite often.. I guess its possible though. I don't know much about jacksonville's pass protection capabilities.

LOL, a guy can dream right? Jax line isn't the best, but it's not that good either. I mean they gave up 5 sacks last week?

Edit: never mind, they gave up 2 sacks. lol

I predict jason williams steps up he was a third round pick so the talent is there it usually takes linebacks 3-5 seasons to get it right. for james anderson it took him a good bit before the game finally slowed down. The only person im worried about is pugh he seams to lose focus too much.

      They had best show out in Week 1 there are zero,I mean zero,  excuses for that offense  defense, haven’t play together yet and they still have Mr Soft and Predictable as DC  I expect break downs at times  …but that offense returns all starters except Tremble and both Mayes and Brady are veterans and can play LG and know the system not up for any participation awards this season they can save that practice energy for Jacksonville.     I’m sick of the, winning,  or looking competitive, when it doesn’t matter.

      There are some tough decisions that I'm eager to see the results of... Does Blackshear sneak on to the roster as RB4? Does the team go with 4 TEs or just 3 again? And has Mitchell Evans done enough to defend his roster spot from James Mitchell? Who is WR6 and is there a WR7? TMac, XL, Coker, and AT seem to be locks imo and I'm assuming Renfrow also makes it due to all of the camp praise. Who makes it between Brycen Tremayne, Jimmy Horn Jr, and David Moore? If the team goes with 7 WRs, which one of those three doesn't make it? Jacolby George and Emani Bailey both have not gotten a lot of game time. Could the Panthers be trying to hide them so that they can be stashed on the PS? Do they go with 10 OL instead of 9? Who makes it out of Walton, Carter, and Kingston? DL locks are DB, BB3, ARob, and Turk. That leaves Jaden Crumedy, Cam Jackson, Sam Roberts, Shy Tuttle, and LaBryan Ray all competing for the final 1 - 3 spots. Does DJ Johnson get IR'd and Thomas Incoom make the roster as EDGE5? What in the fuuuuuuuuuuuuck is going to happen at LB? Only locks are Wallace, Rozeboom, and Cherelus (Wallace has mentioned in media how Cherelus has been big bro for him on the team) seem to be locks. Rhattigan had some good moments against Houston, Martin-Scott is an SC guy, Krys Barnes has popped on defense and on special teams, and Windmon got time starting for the team last season. Are two of those guys going to make it or are the Panthers poaching from another team's cuts? CB5... who is it? Do they go with the 4 expected safeties or bring in a 5th? Has Ransom done enough to take the start from Nick Scott?

      I had this discussion with my buddy yesterday afternoon. If we start this season very slow(especially with the schedule being what it is) and then "rally" in the second half to get to 4-7 wins, I am already gonna be pretty heated at the staff overall. I know we are a very bad roster but I am not gonna keep excusing these slow season starts WITH late season rallies. That's a coaching staff problem, IMO. It's more excusable to just stink gate to gate, IMO. At least you can understand why.
