D-will responds to criticism on his facebook

Yep the exact same offensive line we had during the last two games in 2008 (when we rushed for a combined 398 yards) suddenly became terrible, I'm sure that's what happened.

panthers55 is correct in that the way we call running plays and run block as a whole now is completely different. But J-Stew was successful under Fox, and he's been successful when given the chance now. It's not unreasonable for us to expect the same out of Deangelo. Mostly because of that ridiculously, retardedly large contract extension we gave him.

Also, the great ones get it done, regardless of the blocking in front of them.

i don't hear anybody comparing williams to barry sanders anymore lol. just a lot of excuses and deflection

I was never really sold on his vision. What I always liked about him was the ability to just move from scrimmage to secondary like everyone else was standing still. His acceleration was the best I've ever seen. He just hasn't gotten the opportunity to be that kind of runner because the D is putting 6 guys on the ball.

I bet you're referring to this type of stuff

I'm really not a fan of the blocking schemes on the runs in our new system. Again, I love the passing game, but the run game is weak.

Go back and look at the design of most of them. I've noticed a lot of our runs now hinge greatly on the blocking of the WR on the outside... If he misses, the play is dead. Also, we run A LOT of non-power plays, or "weak" plays compared to our old running style, so if one person misses their block or can't hold it, the play dies quickly.

In the past, we lined up with a TE and the FB on the same side, let you know we were coming that way, pulled the guard, and dared you to stop it.

In this system, it's a lot of moving parts and sometimes it just seems it's overthought. A lot of shifting and misdirection that relies on each guy to beat their man individually, and if they don't the play won't amount to much.

From what I've seen, the guys are doing a much better job of holding their blocks for Stew. Also, Stew is consistently breaking the first tackle whereas DeAngelo isn't, but that's usually because the first tackle for him is 5 guys rather than one.

It's not DeAngelo. But, I have to be honest, this run scheme is REALLY irking me right now. I just got to the point today where I felt like "This is why Cam was throwing 45 times a game..." Because the way the current run game is constructed, it's not really worth trying, I would just rather us throw it.

Remember the last time our run game didnt suck? Yup that was the same time Delhomme didnt suck either. Watch Cam get better and that oline gel and everything will fall in place. I doubt we will ever see a John Fox power O anymore but a SD type attack seems likely.

Deangelo is getting hit by 2 guys or more in the backfield on almost every carry. I don't fault him at all. It'll come together. I said it before, the way defenses are playing us and the way our Oline is run blocking suits Stewart a lot better than Deangelo. Deangelo needs a little space to make things happen and is more of a big play RB. Stewart is more dependable but less of a big play threat (carries of 20+ yards) when the Oline is blocking right, in my opinion.

I hadn't noticed that. Would be an interesting theory to research. One thing I did notice is that when we ran a counter for the first time, Deangelo ran it for like 11 yards. I think Burlein pointed it out. Those are the kind of plays Deangelo excels with. A lot of his runs have been straight up the gut with no holes and that's just not his game.

I still believe if Dwill keeps pounding, sooner or later he's going to bust loose. Sometimes it takes longer for one guy than another. I remember a couple of years ago it was Stew who was the slow one to start racking up yards on a consistent basis. This year it seems to be Deangelo. But hey, that's why we run a two-back scheme, isn't it? If one guy's struggling, there's another one there to take up the slack. Instead of looking at it like Dwill has lost a step, I prefer to look forward to what it'll be like when he finally gets his groove on, and both backs are kicking butt. You're my guy, Dwill! And Double Trouble rules!

It took DeAngelo 4-5 games before he got going in '08.

I think the blocking scheme has a lot to do with it as far as guys not being as familiar with it and overthinking rather than just playing.

I do know that in Cleveland Chud's offense had a pretty good run game with Jamal Lewis. I think they'll get it sorted out sooner or later. We've got too much talent on the OL and in the backfield to keep struggling like this.
