Peppers won't be traded at a discount

if they don't move Peppers till draft day, what Free Agents will be left for us to get and fill the multiple spots we need to fill?

unknown. there are usually quite a few FAs let go post draft and quite a bit of value can be found there.

will any of them match pep's potential? probably not but there wasn't much available prior to the draft either.

for depth and backups (which really is all the needs that we have at the moment) there will be plenty available, though.

I would like to see Carey talk to the Packers about their unhappy Kampman and their 1st or 2nd for Peppers. Green Bay has the cap room and their pro-bowl DE is not thrilled to switch to a Dom Capers 3-4 defense. Capers would lobby hard for them to make this deal. He loves freak athletes (Gilbert). It would give us a pro-bowl DE (who likes to play every down) and another top pick to get another D-lineman or DB.

I say keep franchising until he holds out or retires...he is making us miserable lets return the favor

DO you know how much that will cost? To tag him again next year will guarantee him a 20% raise. At 16.7 million this year, that'll put his hit at 20 mill + next year. To tag a player a third year guarantees him a 44% raise so for 2011 pep's hit would be ~28.9 million. Please make me miserable.

6 year 90 million deal

15 Million per season. = maybe worth it, but not really worth it

6 years under the tag

16.7 , 20.4 , 24.5, 29, 34.8, 41.5 = not worth it

Wrong. If tagged a third year, the CBA requires a tender of a 44% increase over the previous year (the likely higher of the options). That makes the 24.5 you listed turn into the 28.9 that I mentioned.

Article XX Section 2

Bottom of page 68 through top of 69

If you thought your number weren't worth it, re-do them with how much it'd really cost

That assumes the CBA agreement won't be changed in 2011. Owners will be working hard to cut back on what players get which may impact the franchise tag.

I just won't Peppers to be traded for something honestly. I would be happy with a second rounder at this point. Yes he is obviously worth a lot more than that but with him here there is no guarantee he is going to perform as well as we expect him to, and he is going to eat up all of our cap room. If this trade with NE happens, we get the 2nd rounder but also $17 mil in cap space to use on FAs and draftees.

If he does end up staying then I dont see him holding out. I see him getting double digt sacks next year even with the panthers.

Its in Peppers best interest to get out now coming off 14.5 sack season.

More money now, may be less if he has off season with panthers

2 different things with 2 different purposes. The money the players get, the salary cap, is based on a percentage of league revenues. There is a minmum amount that each team must pay. Most aren't aware of that. The upper limit gets more attention and is intended to help the players get to free agency. Better players can get tagged to guarantee them big paydays but also force teams to make the decision that we now face with peppers. Pay him big and let others test free agency or let him walk so he can test it. Bottom line is right now, we are maxed out, exactly as the NFLPA would want every team.

If the #34 pick is truly being offered....and there is no other better offer, I can definitely see the Panthers pulling the trigger and making the trade.

If Peppers stays under the tag, we are handcuffed in salary cap and must sacrifice desperately needed depth. Not to mention that we are in exactly the same spot next season.

You have to remember...you would not just be moving Peppers for the #34 pick. You are moving him for the #34 pick and the 2-3 other players that you could sign in addition to the pick. We need quality OL, DL, and CB depth. With Peppers' $17M tag, that is nearly impossible to achieve.

The owners are unhappy they gave the players the percentage of money that they did. They want to reduce that by 5% which would reduce everyone's cap or the maximum amount a team may spend. There has been some talk about lowering the minimum that a team must spend depending on their market and potential sources of revenue.

As for the franchise tag, I have read that they would like to do away with the 20% increase year over year and just make it an average of the top 5 or top 10 depending on whether it was nonexclusive, exclusive or transitional tag.

How are they related? Less cap may make teams less willing to franchise a player if that means their salary escalates significantly. Particularly at an expensive position such as quarterbak where the tag is around 14 million this year. They will be more conscious of every dollar. They will also be more likely to trade players to eliminate their cap hit as NE did with Cassel after franchising him for the pick.
