So when should Hurney start talking to Bus Cook about a contract extension

I find it hard to believe Cam would just peace out after 4 seasons. This organization will offer him a HUGE contract well into the 90-100 million dollar range. The Panthers made him the number 1 pick. They show any effort adding weapons for Cam he's staying. You go out and sign a Vincent Jackson or DeSean Jackson when they are free agents...he's staying for sure. Free Agents will want to come play with Cam. Look what he has done for 89.

If he really wanted to leave he would, regardless of whether we were able to negotiate after his first year or his third.

More to it than that. Sounds like first round picks under the new CBA are not free and clear after their 4th year. Team still has options other than the franchise tag.

Last year, without ever having thrown a pass for the St. Louis Rams, Bradford got a six-year, $78 million contract with $50 million guaranteed. Cam Newton, this year's No. 1 overall pick, will make roughly half that in his first contract with the Carolina Panthers.

The first-round picks will not really cash in until their fifth year, when the teams will have the option to extend the first-rounder's contract at what the league called "agreed-upon tender amounts." That is not Bradford or Matthew Stafford money, not even close.

i hope it works out for us with him long term a key to it not being a difficult thing to swing, though (which it could) is making sure that we don't force him to carry the team on his back the way he is now and instead surround him with talent on offense and make the defense and STs less sucky.

you want to keep your QB (or any uber-talented player) around long term? you put him in a situation that he can win in. detroit (and the NFL) lost barry sanders because of that. that's the reason lebron left cleveland. hurney's got to be smart with bringing talent in and they can't limit themselves to the draft. trading for olsen and bringing in shockey showed me that they are willing to go out and find the pieces needed to make it work.

they essentially have the offensive side of the ball secured (aside from maybe depth on the oline and another top end WR). there are some issues that need to be addressed on defense and on special teams. defense really just needs beason back (they need him as a field general) and a better dline interior and they will be solid enough. that can be taken care of in the next year. rivera & co. will know what they need. they'll be able to find it. of that i have no doubt.
