Cam Newton vs Andrew Luck - Now who would you choose?

actually that poster was right - people were saying early (it may have actually been after week 2 though, not 4, can't recall) that Indy made the wrong choice - not solely because of stats, but because of wins...

Stats, too. Peyton threw 11 picks to 3 TDs in his first 4 games. Started 0-4.

cam is carrying the football team, which is what clausen couldn't do. andrew luck would not have anywhere near the success cam has had. i take cam any day. now, if he can just work on his accuracy, and avoid the sanchez effect.

Cam is a success?? I thought this team was 1 - 3 my bad. Heck at least Andy Dalton doesn't have a losing record.

well there you go :p

way too early to be sure Cam is going to be an all time great or whatever some around here seem sure of but I have no reason to think right now the Panthers should give him up for anything, even if I do think Luck could be a great player. Cam's exceeding expectations and is not at all the reason the team is losing. He may not be winning us games yet, but he's usually able to keep us in them.

I love the arrogance of calling Luck a bust when he is thought to be the best prospect since Manning.

it's frustration that he went back to school for most.

I don't think he's going to bust, but I still think that unless Cam falls apart on an epic scale, you already have the quarterback you're going to build around so I don't even worry about Luck.

not that I am saying Luck has the same strength as Cam, and while he might not be able to throw the ball 60 yards off his back foot, but there are a bunch of occurrences of him throwing it 40 or so while off balance or other weird poo. His arm is very strong, even if it isn't "cam strong."
This is the same point I'm making; Luck has good arm strength but its not elite.

Cam has elite arm strength and playmaking ability and athleticism.

Some people claim that Luck is a better prospect, I'm just curious what they're looking at when they make this claim.

yeah people who are calling luck a bust are just some spiteful motherfugers. he will be a great qb.

tbh the only thing i would rank him ahead of newton is his intelligence (not a racist comment btw, the guy was valedictorian and goes to stanford)

Yeah, if I included non-football intelligence as part of a QB evaluation Luck would have the advantage there.

Picking Luck over Newton in the draft was not about the physical skills. Everyone agreed that Newton was more physically talented and could do some things notably with his legs that Luck couldn't. The idea was that Luck was coming from a pro offense under Harbaugh and would be a no risk sure pick if you were drafting number 1. He had the skills, smarts, work ethic, and training.

Newton was a high risk guy who was going to need years to develop and had character issues. But since it turns out Newton has great character, is very hard working, is smart and has picked up a pro style offense is half the time it took Luck to learn, it changes the dynamics considerably.

Who will be better? Hard to say but what we do know is that the talking heads and supposed experts might now be nearly as smart as they think they are and all the buzz about Luck may be 50% truth and 50% hype.

    • If we divide the league up into quarters you need to be able to make 8 worse starting QBs for him not to be bottom tier. Who are they?
    • It just doesn't add up to what we're watching. It feels like you're trying to convince yourself that Bryce can just make a few adjustments and pan out. You say he turns the ball over because he's over aggressive and I just don't see that. A lot of his turnovers are just bad throws oftentimes because the balls sails in him. The fumble issues? I mean, you have the smallest QB in the NFL getting hit by extremely large powerful kej who knows based on film study that this guy is prone to coughing up the ball. If you're being hit by a much larger, much more powerful man intent on removing the ball from your possession you're gonna lose that battle a decent amount of the time. I think some of it is due to bad footwork but some of it is also that when there's traffic in front of him he has to try to get the ball up and over that pressure due to his lack of height. His release point it just several inches lower than most NFL QBs, no way around it. You saying it's more difficult than simply looking at outcomes while completely leaning on situational stats to try to convince people their eyes are lying to them and Bryce's arm isn't a significantly limiting factor in his game. Some people are hyperbolic about his lack of arm strength but honestly he has one of the weakest arms in the league. That's just reality if you objectively watch him play versus other NFL QBs. If he had time in a clean pocket and can step up into and through his throw he can make most throws but that's the problem, for him to make the tougher throws everything has to go perfect. If there's pressure pushing him off his spot or pressure in front of him where he can't step up or has to try to loft the pass over the scrum it's probably ending in a poor result. The problem is that's a commonplace scenario in the NFL. It wasn't at Alabama. Trust your own QB analytical system. Bryce being very the bottom of the league matches up perfectly with the eye test of just watching him olay
    • If he wanted to be as irrelevant as possible in his final year he's achieving it.
