Let teeray make you feel better...

This loss hurt maybe more than the other 3. And you should never take solace in a loss. Especially one you legitimately should have won. The other three losses I felt we could have won. Today I feel like we should have won and that is always more frustrating. The infamous timeout, the third down bomb to Smitty (I didn't have a problem with the play but some here did and I understand why), the missed extra point, and the fact that we had the lead with the ball in the fourth quarter and couldn't get it done. It hurts and you shouldn't feel good after this one.

But enough of the debbie downer stuff here is why you should still be excited about this team and this coaching staff.

We have played the two best teams in the NFC (in my opinion) and a playoff caliber team (Bears) and given them all they can handle and had opportunities to win all three games. As some of you have eloquently put it "we are good enough to play with anybody but not good enough to beat anybody". That feels true and it is so frustrating to be this close to the hot girl and yet you still haven't been able to kiss her.

But let's look at what we are doing and who we are doing it with.

We have some real weapons on offense. There is no doubt about that. And the offense has been very productive as well. The scary thing is we are doing it with a QB that has been spectacular, but who is also still a rookie and is learning as he goes. It is my expectation that many of the mistakes he is making (as few as they may be) will be cleaned up considerably over the next couple of seasons. We are also doing this with a #2 receiver that was picked up off the waiver wire. He is a receiver that a non-playoff team from last year (although a pretty good team usually) thought wasn't good enough to play for them. Here at Carolina he is our #2 receiver. And despite that we have had one of the more prolific offenses in the entire NFL so far.

Imagine what this offense can be when we get someone more capable at that receiver position and Cam Newton has more experience under his belt.

Our defense has been pretty poor as well to this point. But when you look at this defense you can't help but feel that with the loss of Beason and Davis we are playing with only three legitimate NFL starters on the entire defense (Gamble, Hardy, and CJ). The rest of the defense is littered with guys who may be solid but better suited as backups, rookies, and guys playing major roles who again were picked up through the waiver wire or were cut by other teams. It is literally a gaggle of misfits trying to learn a new defense and compete against the likes of Aaron Rodgers, Jay Cutler, and Drew Brees. Not a good recipe for success.

All this isn't intended for you to be happy about a game we should have won but didn't. You shouldn't be happy about today's loss.

But it is an attempt to bring attention to the fact that this team is putting themselves in positions in which we could/should win games against the very best the NFC has to offer... and it is only the beginning. This is the launching off point. This in all likelihood is our basement, not our ceiling, as an organization with this QB and this coaching staff.

And if this is only the beginning and we are not just competing with these teams but in positions to win against the best in the NFC? Well... let's just say that in a very short amount of time as this team and coaching staff grow together... not only will we finally kiss the hot girl, we will be humping her until the sun comes up. :) :) :)
