Delhomme Extension?

If this is a surprise to folks, you just haven't been paying attention. Jake is the winningest quarterback in our franchise history and has one of the best winning percentages in the league over the past 5 or 6 years. Anyone who would dump a quarterback after going 12-4 last year is crazy.
So, in other words, John Fox thinks like this:

When Jake is under center, I'm more likely to have my team win the game and therefore, my job is relatively safe. I know what I can expect from him and that's enough for me, especially since I like having a winning record.

When Jake is not under center, I'm more likely to have my team lose the game and therefore, my job could be in jeopardy. My backups that I've had before (Weinke, Carr) have been terrible and I don't have much confidence handing the job to a rookie.

Releasing Jake means I either have to:

- Use a high draft pick on some kid that may turn out to be a bust. Screw this up and I'm out of a job and I don't want that.

- Find a proven free agent on the market. Unfortunately, the timing may not be right and there may be no one I can afford or no one that fits our system and needs. Might find the perfect superstar or someone else's garbage nobody wants. That sounds risky.

- Use lower picks or find young kids from practice squads and see if we find a diamond in the rough. Repeat as necessary. I don't think I've found one yet, maybe with Moore, but I'm not sure enough to the point of bringing in McCown.

Therefore, I'm not dumping the known for the unknown no matter what the fans and media say until I feel confident that the unknown will provide at least the same results as I have now.

Am I in the ballpark or am I crazy?

There's a big problem with what you're saying...it makes sense and will very likely therefore be ridiculed here. I'm all for sticking with Jake and in '10 or so, go with Moore. But keep Jake and let him retire as a Panther.

I knew that would be the argument when I used it but Marty was fired due to strained relationships with Smith and not his record. After 4 of his assistants left for promotions, and Marty wanted his brother to replace Wade Phillips the relationship worsened. From what I read since they were going to have to hire a whole new staff anyway, they decided to clean house and start fresh.

Not to mention it was Philip Rivers' first full season as a starter, and Shawn Merriman's rookie year. They lost in the playoffs on a flukish Interception/forced fumble by Troy Brown, and supposedly conservative Marty threw the ball on 2 and 5 twice in a row near the end which resulted in a punt. And of course a missed long field goal as time expired kept the game from going into overtime. Against a pretty good Patriots team.

I am not even going to get into the argument as to whether or not Jake is good enough to be Carolina's QB BUT I will say that so as long as John Fox is head coach and Marty Hurney is the GM of this team, you can bet your bottom dollar that Jake will be the QB of this team and unless the team goes out and hires an Offensive head coach who runs the West Coast Offense, I don't even think another head coach would bench Jake.

What most of you are not getting is that all of you can stay mad that Delhomme is still the man under center but HIS TEAMMATES, COACHES, and MARTY HURNEY and even RICHARDSON believe in him.

This isn't a matter of fans defending Jake or fans wanting Jake out of Carolina but this is about what the coaches believe, because, after all, they are the coaches and we're not.

ATLEAST they got to the playoffs, it may have not been pretty getting there but they did. They posted the best team record under John Fox and most importantly, John Fox IS STILL THEIR HEAD COACH!

not to mention that every season Delhomme is our starting QB we ARE in the playoffs or fighting for a spot up until the very last game.

there is something special about having that chance.

    • I still think another QB is brought in Day 3. Grier is camp body level at this point.
    • We’re in a pickle. My best hope is we protect him and can run the ball vs most Ds and the WRs are healthy so he has every chance to not look like what he looked like in too many games last year.
    • I'm really not stressing about upgrading from Bryce. I'm frustrated with our inability (or refusal) to recognize overall bad QB performance and failure to seriously address the issue. QB is the most impactful position on the field, and we're not only settling for what we've been given to this point, but we've rewarded it with a fully guaranteed 5th year extension for a player that's never played 2 NFL franchise QB quality games back to back in 3 seasons. I can't understand how that's ok from a coach's or GM's viewpoint. Successful franchises don't do things like this. It just doesn't make sense.  We do not have a top half of the league QB right now. Since we don't have that player, we should be looking for him. Pickett isn't it. Grier isn't it. Bryce hasn't proven he is yet. Until you have that sure fire franchise QB, you keep looking. You're not consistently making the playoffs, a deep run, or a SB appearance without one.  What's the worst that could happen? We end up with 2 potential number 1 QBs? How horrible.
