Cam Newton Erases All Doubt

As Newton leaned against a tiny lectern, he looked about as cheery as a 10-year-old who'd just learned his new bike had been stolen.

The hardest thing for Newton to grasp -- even in the midst of a season where Carolina is now 2-5 following Sunday's 33-20 win over Washington -- is that there should be plenty of optimism stirring in this franchise. In just seven weeks, he has gone from being the most scrutinized No. 1 overall pick in NFL draft history to being hailed as a burgeoning superstar.

Just hoping he doesn't Lebron James the Panthers.

I really don't get this concern. Do you see "Chosen One" tattooed anywhere on Cam? He believes every loss is his fault, never that his supporting cast fails him. They couldn't be more different.

Besides, he's a national figure already, no need to go to a big media market like NBA players have to, and we'll always be able to pay him more than other teams (not that he's shown he's terribly concerned about the money. He just wants to play and win football games.)

hard to compare because this is less likely in the NFL because one player can't make a team, even though he has had a huge impact on the panthers...Also, his personality is not like Lebron's. His work ethic, passion and the willingness to be great is nothing like Lebron.

No I understand the personality differences and the fact that football is a totally different team sport than basketball. (Different in the sense that most bball players take a diva persona) Just saying if the chips don't fall where we hope them too that he doesn't get fed up with losing so much that he leaves.

true...I would certainly hope that we continue to put a team out there in the next few years that is a playoff contender every year.

Forgive my ignorance, but how exactly can we always pay him more than other teams?

"The guy always had a big-time arm and he's always been accurate," the (NFL) personnel director said. "If you go back and look at the games he played in the second half of last year -- many against great competition -- he made some throws that proved his coaches trusted his arm."

And there are still some that will insist that he was not an accurate passer in college.

Cam wants to play and he wants to win. He couldn't do both at Florida. He left. Maybe a bad thing to use in the "Cam would never pull a LeBron" argument.

But Cam is very different from LeBron. As long as he's winning, he's happy. Look at his press conference. Surround the guy with a good team as JR is trying to do, and he's as happy as Rodgers in GB, or Brady in NE. There's also the little matter of franchise tags and the Panthers' insistence on keeping their own stars.

It's no guarantee, but if guys like Smith and Beason come back to Carolina, so would Cam.

    • Im very similar to Ron in being a company/league man. But that ends after the third head hit, I would have lost my religion. Then after I got kicked out of the game, Id 100% be dropping nukes in the after-game presser. fug you fine me whatever, I am going to protect my QB and since logic and reason isn't being used, I can be the bad guy.  The replays showed clear evidence, Id feel no shame in cussing out a crew of chicken poo refs. In fact Id tell the video staff to play infractions on a split screen during my press conference.
    • And even worse you have injuries force you to play anther one dimensional train wreck combine that with Orlov being no were close to as advertised and boom you have 3 defensemen being dressed who couldn't defend my 96 year old grandmother. That said next year having Slavin,Miller,Nikishin,Chatfield gives you the best shutdown d man in the league two large athletic HIGH offensive potential D who can take away time and space....   The more I think about it the more I like this seasons approach, if you bring back burns or aquire anther large RHS with length you have 5 D all over 6'2 and 210 with three of them having great offense too, make no mistake they want size and skill on the blue line now and its almost 100% directed at getting past FL.
    • Honestly the 2024 draft class(minus brooks). All are in line to be starters, expect crumedy who's fighting for a 53.  Still that class was looking terrible, is now looking like 4 starters and maybe 1 depth. Anytime you draft 2 starters and a key depth piece its a good draft. 4 starters are rare and that's with brooks who could have made 5 starters if not for awful luck.  That draft also helped land starter Michael Jackson in a round about way, big bonus..
