He's better than Mare. Touchbacks are nice, but points I like better. He's still hitting 84% of his kicks to Mare's 81%. Plus our coach doesn't have enough confidence in him to kick the long range ones where Kasay used to kick. I'll never understand our FO's logic to not get a younger kicker and get a weaker one in Mare. He was never that good. He had 5 seasons in Miami in the 70's for FG percentage. Kasay's long range stats are better. It just doesn't make sense not to go younger.

Its not, but the thing is, when you are consistent from further out, its more of an aberration more than a trend.

I'm in no way, shape, or form excusing him for missing the 31 yarder, because he should have made it. But they ALL count. Was one more important? hell yes, but as I keep saying, kickers fug up all the time. Could have been anyone.

And lets not pretend like this hasn't happened to Kasay, because it has.

1) kasay is, as of right now, hitting 80% of his kicks. mare is 81% - including the one block that would bump him up significantly if you remove it from his attempts column.

2) kasay is, as of right now, hitting 43% of his kicks from 40+ yards compared to 80% for Mare. sure, kasay has hit 30% (one) of his kicks >50 yards while Mare has only tried once (and missed it), but come on.

3) the idea that you'd rather have "points" than "touchbacks" is nice and all but considering how bad our coverage units are we absolutely require them.

4) mare doesn't have the accuracy that Kasay has but he allowed us to free up a roster spot... sure they coulda cut baker and picked up a punter that could kick off but they went in a different direction.

as to going young, who do you think we should have brought in that was available?

a field goal attempt on the 40 yard line is a 57 yard field goal... very few coaches call those regularly. even Fox punted in most of those situations, and he had The Golden Leg on his side.

Mare does not have the leg to make a 57 yarder, and even Kasay's career long is 56 ;)

That was a freaking chip shot and you know it. Indoors artificial turf anything under 45 is a chip shot for NFL kickers plain and simple. Point is all you guys puffing on Kasay's ball sack can't take it that Kasay is not any better than Mare. Yeah Mare should have made the kick last week but guess what he didn't.
