Penn State...what did Paterno know?

The reason little attention was paid to the story is directly related to the insular nature of happy valley.

The place is 3 hours from nowhere, and ALL life revolves around the football program.

JoePa is king, and he rules like a fiefdom.

Even in this day and age of small world, that place is something different.

And it was this, and the inaction of quite a few authority figures that should have known better, that allowed this to continue for as long as it did.

Sunshine is a great disinfectant.

Problems happen when you hide stuff from that sunshine.

PSU normally only allows what it wants out to come out.

Big problem there.

Last night was one of the most fascinating media experiences I can ever remember. I was up until 1:30am reading and watching everything I could. It's on par, for me at least, with the OJ White Bronco chase and the Osama Bin Laden operation in Pakistan.

Twitter is such an amazing medium for these types of things. There was such a wealth of jokes, reports, commentary and breaking news on there last night, all before it ever went to ESPN or CNN. Which, by the way, DID ESPN NOT THINK TO BRING MORE THAN ONE REPORTER WITH A CAMERA TO HAPPY VALLEY LAST NIGHT? And the one guy who had one, Tom Rinaldi, was seriously in the only place in the entire town where there wasn't any news even happening. If Tony Romo had been in Happy Valley last night there would have been 50 cameras there following him, but the biggest sports scandal in history and we're listening to Ryan Burr answer Stuart Scott's inane questions on a cellphone with no visual other than Scott's lazy eye? GTF outta here ESPN. CNN was doing a fantastic job right up until the point where they had Anderson Cooper interviewing Dr. Phil about ways to protect your children. Then my eyes and ears simultaneously melted.

As for Penn State fans, I'd like to think last night was less of a gathering of JoePa supporters than it was just a gathering of loitering students looking to be part of something. Because I can't honestly draw any conclusion for those who were outraged that Paterno was let go than that they are quite literally mentally retarded. What Paterno knowingly conspired to hide and failed to report will one day be criminal in the State of Pennsylvania. There's no justification for what he did (or really didn't) do. He's a sick, sad, pathetic old man who's held that program hostage for decades, and I find great joy in the fact that he gets to watch it all crumble before he dies. Hopefully he'll get to see the B1G take his name off the trophy before he croaks, which won't be long in either case I don't imagine.

Initial reports are that PSU is looking at at least $100 Million in civil lawsuit payments. I do feel bad for the university as a whole, and they need to keep that Surma guy from the presser around in any capacity they can, but other than that, clean the whole fuging house.

Also, do any Penn State fans own an actual pair of pants, or is it all just sweatpants up there?

    • Teams do some super stupid stuff with mid-fairly good QBs. I think they are just absolutely terrified they will be stuck with a QB that is not the quality of the QB they have now, even if its someone like Daniel Jones. Lots of trash QBs go in the first round. I encourage you to take a look at the sad, sad list of first round QBs in the last 15 years.
    • No, it will be a raw 6'7" 17-year-old European who just played basketball for the first time in March and who the idiot GM "had first on our board." He'll play the whole G-League season, get in 42 games for the Hornets and average 1.1 ppg on 35% shooting. Been there, seen that.
    • We missed on Burns at his peak value. That’s the problem with trading for picks 2-3 years away (which people were convinced the Rams would suck by now and these would be higher picks btw). Each year away the pick is the further in value it drops. Fitt was clearly hired based on turning us around quickly. It’s one of the many reasons tanking isn’t really a thing as our player JJ is telling you in this original article. It would take the whole organization from the owners down admitting they aren’t winning soon with Burns and picks 2-3 years away having more value because that’s when we are still rebuilding. It would only make sense if Fitt had a longer leash and would more than likely be the ones making these picks anyway which you wouldn’t want. The question is would you rather have those Rams picks with the strong possibility of Fitt still being here or would you rather Fitt try to “win now” like he did and expedite his firing? Altering the timeline would affect more than just the Rams picks.
