Radiokiller's Mock Draft

Here is my highly anticipated (kidding), too early, mock draft...since it seems like everyone is doing one.

This is more of what I would do, not what I expect will happen, trying to be realistic as possible. As of now, we will be picking around 4-6.

1st Round

Morris Claiborne, CB, LSU

Really would like to take Kalil with the first pick and snag Jenkins in the 2nd for much better value, but don't see him falling to us.

Mo Claiborne fills one of our biggest needs at CB. He is very athletic, demonstrates very good ball skills, as well as great coverage skills. His size is also a bonus. He should come in right away and start alongside Gamble. He would move Munnerlyn to Nickel DB where Captain would surely benefit from.

2nd Round

Sean Spence, OLB, Miami (FL)

Many question his size and wonder if he'd be better suited for safety. But I think if he could just add some muscle and some pounds he will fit just fine at OLB. With the uncertainty of Thomas Davis, an OLB seems like a good pick. Spence is a tackling machine and is one of the few bright spots on the otherwise shaky Miami defense. He has quickness to move laterally and if he shows willingness to add some weight (he did so in his college career) he should be a factor in run defense.

4th Round

MattMcCantsUSM1.jpg

Matt McCants, OT, UAB

McCants is an athletic OT who is fits the LT mold. I have always thought that Gross should be moved to RT and allow someone else to protect Cam's blind side. Matt McCants has all the tools to play LT, just needs to get a little more built for the overpowering defenders. But when it comes to quicker opponents, McCants athleticism allows him for great range.

5th Round

George Iloka, FS, Boise St.

There has been some debate on whether or not Martin is starter material. While some think we are set at FS, competition never hurts. Iloka has size and decent speed at the FS position. He is versatile player and has even played at the CB position for Boise.

6th Round

Gerell Robinson, WR, Arizona St.

Don't think WR is the biggest of needs but if Robinson is still sitting here in the 6th, he'd be a great value pick. He is big receiver at 6'3" and 220 pounds. So it stands to reason he is a physical, possession-type receiver.

7th Round

renardwilliams_display_image.jpg?1316615964

Renard Williams, DT, E.Washington

Here is an off the radar pick as not many people have heard of Williams out of Eastern Washington. We are young at the DT position and the injury to Edwards didn't help but there is still room for more bodies. Williams has a knack for getting to the QB, something we desperately need.

You seemed to hit on most of our needs. The only pick I don't agree with is McCants. I don't feel we have any room on the 53 man roster for another OT. We are simply not going to release Otah.. and Gross/Gary Williams/Ziemba/Bell will all be back. Only thing missing is MLB, because Connor probably won't be back.. but very nice mock!

Thanks.

I went with the OT pick because I don't think Otah is really all that dependable. He is injured more than he is healthy.

That is totally true, but we won't cut him next season. And I don't think we will keep 6 OTs on the 53 man roster. imo.

Not saying we have to cut him. Keep him on the roster for depth. Good thing is, this would be a 4th rounder, not someone expected to come in and take Otah's spot. But on the other hand, we need to draft one or add one in FA for the sheer fact that Otah is hardly dependable.

We can always cut someone else besides Otah who is not needed.

Who do you suppose we cut? Ziemba? He seems to be the most logical imo, in your scenario.

Yeah it doesn't matter. If my 4th round OT (McCants) comes in and beats out Ziemba, cut him. You just keep your best OTs (however many you want to keep). But we need an upgrade in depth. Our back ups need to be better than our current back ups. Also we need someone to come in and compete for a starting job as Otah is not dependable.

I don't think anyone drafted outside the 1st round will challenege Otah for a starting spot.. at least not soon.

Bell is doing it right now. Not because of talent but because he can stay on the field.

And there are sleepers everywhere in each draft. It's not about where you are drafted, but how you perform. Not saying McCants/or any other 4th rd OT is going to come in and start right away. We just need to upgrade that position.

    • I will as soon as you withdraw your fandom from the Patriots. Informative threads are great but all of these estrogen and emotion driven threads you start are ridiculous.
    • Will be there tonight and expect nothing from the Canes. They are soft and won't go after anyone, nor will they respond when, not if, Florida starts bullying them. Not to mention Freddie is in net. I fear this will be an ass-kicking.
    • Is this not a bit contradictory?  Also surely if any of us are smart enough to evaluate what we're seeing in real time, a former NFL QB can at least manage the same.  Especially considering he's basing his analysis on hours (maybe generous?) of reviewing All-22 footage which he can play back over and over again, focusing each time on different position groups, match-ups, progressions, etc. which is simply impossible for a fan to fully assess in real time.  Unless you're actually at the game, we basically only get the QB/O-line in frame during the broadcast and even in that limited window of the field, there is simply too much happening.  I'm usually broadly focusing on Bryce, maybe peeping the footwork (or lack thereof) and just the overall pocket and whether there is any pressure coming.  I'm not able to watch every individual one-on-one o-line match-up on top of it to see who got beat, who didn't pick up a blitz, which o-lineman didn't shift to help double-team, or whatever else. I think the truth is somewhere in between (as is almost always the case).  Knowing the play call, audible, etc. is pretty important when judging individual performances, which is why we should always take PFF grades with a grain of salt.  But yeah we can also get a pretty good overall sense of how a player is performing just from watching the game on the couch on Sundays.  I still think there's a lot of value in a review video like this.  As long as you have the bare minimum media literacy to take the interesting insights while also acknowledging inherent biases from a video like this (i.e. obviously focusing on the good over the bad).
