Pilares questionable for Sunday

His PR return average sucks, but to be fair he has fielded every punt this year (32?) and I remember only one touching the ground, which he recovered. Return stats don't show that as a fumble, so zero fumbles. With our turnover problems, I'll take it.

To be honest, the only reason I say that I used to cringe when he fielded punts is because he never returned punts before he entered the NFL. I doubt there are any current NFL punt returners that could say the same thing.

It would certainly be preferable to have someone more experienced do it, but Smith or Gamble aren't going to be assigned to do it. We also could use a better ST unit as a whole in there helping out. Punt returns aren't 1 versus 11.

I bet that Edwards starts the game at kickoff. We will see what he can do, evaluate him in a game situation. Unless Pilares is 100%, there is no reason to put him in this week. Expect us to keep trying different guys in various combinations looking for what works the best at every position. We need to see who is improving and who isn't. It won't hurt anything to see what Edwards can do,you can't see what he can do in a game unless he gets a chance. Maybe he blows but maybe he does well.

Currently at 3-8, and hamstrung with injuries, surely the players know that they are now in an audition for future roster spots. Aside from one draft, two significant free agency pickups and the Olsen trade, this staff has been utilizing the players they inherited from John Fox's tenure. Anything else has been stop-gap measures. I'm hoping Rivera's staff makes final decisions about our guys in these final few games and uses those to craft the 2012 Draft/FA strategy. I still want to win games, but there might be a little more experimentation than you would normally see.
