Todd McShay First Mock Draft

Recommended Posts

That's probably pretty close to accurate.

Colts need a QB, Rams need a line for Bradford, Minnesota's defense is getting old, the whole Hillis fiasco in Cleveland leaves them needing a running back, the pass rush of the Jags is horrible (especially since Matt Roth has been hurt some games), Barber is getting old, Shanahan wants a mobile QB, Miami needs a pro guy to learn behind Moore, and that leaves us Blackmon.

I'd love to get Blackmon, and at #9 is good value. A lot of people don't like taking WR TOO high because of the "they don't make a big enough impact" argument, and I don't completely disagree, but at #9 I wouldn't call that too high. Besides, look what AJ Green has done for the Bengals. I don't think they're regretting spending the #4 on him :)

If Blackmon were in last years draft he would have been the 3rd WR taken behind Green and Jones. The Falcons would not have traded their entire draft for Blackmon, I can guarantee that. Blackmon would have went #14 to the Rams last year. I don't think it's as good of value as it appears to be.

LOL! Give me ONE reason why Jacksonville wont take blackmon??

Because a new head coach is going to come in, and decide whether or not they need Blaine Gabbert. He's been pretty bad this year, but then again, so has that entire team, minus MJD.

A WR that high is outrageous, especially when you have trouble at QB, DE, CB, and possibly on the OL.

That same GM is still there though. Will he force Gabbert on the new coach?

If I was interviewing for that job, the first question I'd ask is if I will be able to make a decision on whether Gabbert is the future of the franchise at the QB position. If that answer was anything less than an outright yes, I'd simply thank them for their time and walk out.

I'll be damned if I'd get stuck there with Blaine Gabbert as my QB.

Keep an eye on Nick Foles from Arizona as someone that will jump into the 1st round like Ponder did last year. I think he's the guy that's not being mentioned right now, but will benefit the most by Barkley's decision. I think once he gets to the individual workouts and combine, he will shoot up the charts and someone will reach for him in the mid-first.

everyone had a pretty good idea who ponder was all of last year :/

But nobody saw him as a 1st rounder until after the combine..and even then, at best, he was thought of as a 2nd rounder that had a chance to move into the late 1st. Basically, what I am saying is that I think Foles will be a riser at QB, and will probably be taken higher than many think right now. Personally, I'm not super high on him, but he is a big QB, which will be a factor in his overdrafting.

    • I would rather trade for Ramsey. Alexander was great but man his injuries have been on par with Horns in the last couple years.
    • The ball keeps getting pushed down the field. Most of the 2nd rounders won't get full guarantees but they'll get a good chunk of the contract guaranteed. So let's say it's 75%. At the end of the day we're talking about a couple of million over the course of a four year deal. Basically a rounding error in terms of salary cap impact. It's much ado about nothing.
    • Agents only have the upper hand if they think/expect the teams to cave in the end, but that 30 of the 2nd rounders remain unsigned, it shows the Agents might not have it in this case.  A 2nd round pick isn't going to sit out their rookie season as a holdout to re-enter the draft the next year and improve their draft stock and/or ability to stick in the NFL, you really need to be an elite QB prospect to even have the remote chance of doing that successfully. Teams have to draw a line somewhere, if they all say the line is the 1st round, then there isn't much the Agents can do about it if the teams all hold firm, which they should. And yes, you're right about the rookie wage scale, which is exactly why I don't think the Agents will be winning this battle in the end.  The teams know they already screwed up rookie contracts once, they aren't going to fall down that slippery slope again and let it snowball on it's way down.
