He's definitely improved, but there's NO WAY that 95% is legit. I saw him drop AT LEAST 5 passes early in the year. And by drop I mean the ball entered his hands and fell out. Indisputable drops. That would mean he'd have to have had 95 catches since then... And I'm wasn't actually trying to dump on Naanee with my comment, I just chose him because he's the most obvious example. I'm just saying these "drop" numbers are to be taken with a grain of salt. The only one I can believe is Lafell, and that's because to my memory he's only dropped 1 pass this year. Maybe 2 tops, but I can only remember 1.

Brung out all the stats you want, nobody is more clutch than Smitty.

But fumbling the ball in some unusual cases is what's crazy to me

There is So much grey area here. Difficult one handed catches, for example. If caught, they count as a catch, but if dropped, do they count as a drop? I'm not so sure... There were throws to Legatron that he could have tried harder for, and I count those as drops, however difficult the catch may be, but I'm sure this "stat" counts them as nothing. "Missed opportunities" should be factored in, but that's highly circumstantial and subjective. What is perceived as a "catchable" ball? What about if a defender jars the ball loose? What if a defender swats it out of the receiver's hands? I'm not even thinking about the lazy type no effort plays. I'm only counting ones that hit him in the hands and bounced off. If we counted the no effort plays, his % woulda been around 25 for the first half of the season.

To be honest, a lot of pass incompletions that were ascribed to Naanee were actually not very good passes. But then, revisionist history rules all...damn the facts.

People tend to see what they want to see, or at least convince themselves that they are seeing what they want/expect...particularly when they are using their memory.

The problem with Naanee (at least from my perspective) was that he doesn't have the widest catch radius, and it took Cam awhile to figure out where to throw it to him. Where a guy like Smitty will attack the ball and go get it, Naanee needs it to be thrown to a spot where he is comfortable getting it. It seemed like he was able to get open (which is why he was targeted so much), but if the ball wasn't thrown in his sweet spot, it would be incomplete. But, as this stat shows, he didn't drop the ball a lot, rather he didn't really go get it. I think that is why some people see some of his misses as drops.

Fortunately though, Cam and LA seem to have figured each other out and have been much more in sync of late. Regardless, I think that Naanee is probably better suited as a #3 or 4 receiver than #2...which is what I believe caused much of the fan consternation earlier in the season.
