Wide Receiver Questions

Did anyone see how many plays Pilares was in on offense against the Bucs? I was with family for xmas so I wasn't able to watch the game. Did he just come in late because we were killing the Bucs?

Did Armanti get any looks at wide receiver?

Legaaduu is only under contract through this year right? If so we probably are not keeping him around unless someone gets injured right?

I'm a huge Gettis fan, what impact do you think he will have next year. Does anyone else think he can come from IR to be the number 2 receiver at the end of next year?

neither Pilares or AE had any impact, I think they saw a few plays towards the end. Well, at least Pilares was in a few plays.. Not sure about AE..

I expect Naanee will get an extension.. especially if we do not grab a receiver in FA.. he's a solid contributor at the 4th spot and will be good depth should we face any injuries at that position... Naanee is the kind of guy you want to fill your roster with.. he's solid depth, and fans fail to realize how important that is..

I don't think Gettis forgot how to be a receiver.. I expect he'll be a solid option for us, but it may take a little time to get back in rhythm.. both on the field and with Cam.. He has speed that can stretch the field, so if we are talking about who is better between LaFell and Gettis.. we have it made...

I think we need some more talent brought in. The better Cam gets the more we can work away from these heavy TE sets and start adding in 3 WR sets.

Too much stock has been put into Gettis and what he will be. As of right now, he had a decent rookie season.....3 good games. Not enough to erase WR as a spot we don't need to try to upgrade. Forgetting the hands they displayed as rookies.....LaFell overall looked more complete during there rookie campaign.

I think that's a bad idea... The TE position has become such a mismatch it should be the center of our offense... doesn't mean we can't do both, but the last thing I want to see is them get away from 2 TE sets.. it's entirely too valuable, regardless of what team is running it.

it's the future.. let's not run from it.

I think RotoWorld (grain of salt) reports that Lafell's emergence dooms any attempt to re-sign Naanee. Lafell caught as many balls for as many yards as the #3 WR for most of the season. With Gettis coming back, look for the Panthers to sit tight and perhaps take a look at Tutu and Pilares.

Edwards looks like a Pop Warner player who is part of the Make a Wish program. Our loyalty to him and perisistence is a result of MH not wanting to look like a horse's arse for trading away the 33rd pick for a small college QB with no proven abilities to return punts, run routes, or catch passes.

I saw nothing from Pilares or Edwards. Pilares, however, in my opinion, has the most upside.

then we need to upgrade at TE. Need more talent no matter the direction you want to go. Shockey flat out has had a mindblowing season. He can't be counted on to be a staple of this offense the next 2 years or so.....getting too old and has always been too injury prone. Shockey's surprising healthy probably will give too many too much confidence in what he can offer going forward.

if we grab a receiver from some avenue, by no means will I be mad.. And the same goes for TE, however I think TE is more of a stretch.. We have Olsen, Shockey, and Barnidge.. Who realistically is going to replace Olsen and Shockey? Who is going to come cheap to replace Barnidge?

this conversation is going to be hard because there are no definites here.. Barnidge could be that guy, he certainly has the athleticism... Gettis and LaFell could lock down WR for years...

at this point all we have are projections.. I feel good with what we have. what if our entire offense gets injured? what if we have a receiver come in and pull a Ron Edwards? fear isn't going to set us up for the future...

if we stick with Shockey, Olsen, Barnidge, LaFell, Gettis, and Naanee.. I'm good with that too. We have cap space to keep in mind and I really think every dollar may need focused on defense...

we did after all spend a lot this off season, I just don't know how much can go around.

the key to the future is successful drafting.. you have to hit on majority of your picks in some form or fashion.. even if it's just with solid depth..

I expect a lot next year.. but we also have to plan for the future.. we really don't need to spend money on holes that aren't really there when other positions desperately need attention.

I agree with this--well said. The thing that I would like to add is this: Barnidge and Olsen could split wide. Both are big and fast with great hands. Not blockers, but they get in the way.

Barnidge just signed a 1 year deal. To me, that means they are interested. Barnidge is a beast on special teams as well. He is a poor man's Olsen.

The one factor that we cannot forget is this: Cam developed chemistry with Naanee and Lafell as the year progressed. Their hands didn't suddenly get better, the timing did. Remember all of the balls Smitty dropped with Clausen at QB? JC had no timing. SS needs to know when and where the ball is going to be.

When Gettis and Barnidge get on Cam's page, we will see what we have on the roster. Do not base anything on last year or even early this season.

Shockey signed a one-year contract, right? I guess some of the TE packages will be changed if he doesn't stay with the organization. I hope he does, because I think that duo-threat is very valuable and as mentioned, quite lethal.

I never notice Edwards on the field... I remember Gettis being good. Naanee seemed to be more targeted than anyone not named Smith in the WR corps. I can't image that will change until Gettis, LaFell or Edwards really challenge Naanee in training camp. Pilares is strictly here to return kicks.

Shockey is the man. He has the right mind set to put in some more good years, but his style of play may take a toll sooner rather than later with him. I wouldnt ever put a number on it but I would say that Shockey will be the first one retired between him Gamble, and 89. He has the career expectancy of a lineman cause he plays balls out.

Id like to see if Gettis' catching and blocking can improve. Other than that, the dude has everything we need at the moment. I expect him to come back slightly bulkier and a bit heavier next year. 10 pounds might do him right in his frame.

Shockey was a one year band-aid that just happned to work out awesome for a year. Can't put much faith in him staying on the field and being part of what we are building......

Shockey is the best TE on this team right now. He also happens to be the one we can't rely on moving forward.

I do not feel comfortable thinking Carolina can stay put on offense and use Gettis and Barney coming back as reason to let the offense remain as is going forward. For all we know Gettis could be Drew Carter all over again and Barney not worth a poot.....

Steve Smith will once again be a year older......

We need to work on developing and finding Smitty's replacement. That guy should already be on THIS roster. This remains an issue people ignore b/c they love Smitty so much.

    • We won 5 with the worst defense in the history of defenses.  I think free agency and our draft puts us over 6.5.
    • Leaning towards just ordering this tonight, but now I have no idea on size. Has anyone bought a bunch of jerseys in the last few years and can convey how the Game vs Limited vs Reebok versions all fit? These are both Mediums... The white one here is a Reebok one from 2010, and was when they had the "+2 length" on the tag and it was the version with the stitched numbers instead of iron on... the blue one is from 2022 and is the F.U.S.E Limited version also with stitched stuff, not the "game jersey" with the ironed on numbers/letters that they have the T-Mac jerseys in. The old one fits me fine, the blue one was always a tad snug on me, particularly in the shoulders I'm leaning going with a Large based on the CMC, but for all I know, that is made with a tighter cut due to the higher "limited" level and the "game" ones they have for T-Mac are cut more like a T-Shirt and thus will fit more like the old white one I have here, not sure. (and yes, I already tried going to a sporting goods store here to hopefully try on a Lions jersey to see, but they don't have any right now)
    • I think there's a ton of potential in that WR room. But they really are unproven right now. Hopefully they live up to the hype.
