J-Stew - What do we do?

I think there will be room to sign Stewart assuming they can get him for a reasonable price. If he decides to try to maximize his value then we probably trade him or let him walk but I don't think that will happen. If nothing else, they can give him some of the money Thomas Davis was supposed to get prior to his latest injury.

Stewart if he stays healthy....will deserve a bigger contract than Williams got.

Stewart would be starting on most teams. He is one of the most dominant rushers in the league, and is currently on a team and in a system that will only allow him success well past the length of time most featured backs are afforded.

I think the bottom line will be if he wants to be here in the continued role that he currently has (with the possibility of more down the road), and at a salary that keeps him happy and the Panthers competitive in the talent market.

DWill set the price for Stew, plus inflation.

You could also look at it like this. Adrian Peterson, the guy most would agree is/was the best back in the league recently signed for what amounts to 10-11mil a year. If we can get Stewart AND Deangelo for similar money or only a couple million more a season why wouldn't that work? Not only do we basically get two great (Not AP great but still) backs for similar money, we are also protected in case one of them gets injured (sorry AP).

Now if Stewart decides he wants to try to get 8-9mil a season somewhere else then I guess we will have to wave goodbye but I don't get the feeling that is going to be the case.

we could talk hypothetical scenario's all day long, but I rather not. what I do expect is Stew will get paid one way or the other. Stew isn't going to take a largely reduced contract from what DWill received, especially after DWill could have walked and Stew filled his place with a backup running back to sub in.

I don't see how Stewart can recieve a contract that isn't greater than Williams

Williams deal is set just right to allow the team a chance to Sign Stewart. You also have to remember that the Cap is going to jump big time in 2014. So the team can sign Stewart to a 6 year 55 million dollar deal after this coming season and still afford to pay both players by moving the salary for Stewart's deal around a bit.

No it isn't. Williams was signed to a big deal...he was signed for featured back money. That means Carolina will be paying 2 RBs featured back money.......

and they would be doing that on a team that doesn't believe in lining up the old fashioned way and pounding people......both RBs are good enough for those deals in a vacuum but makes little sense given what our offense is.

im against trading him but this offense with cam is like a pro spread option mixture.

cam is already your short yardage back. dwill is speedy solid back, but stew is kinda the same, just with more power. you need a scat/option back in this offense(james, rainey) because people will be spying for cam next year.

so stew might get traded for some draft picks(2-3) to the vikings(ap and toby g are hurt).

you don't trade the younger better back......and instead keep the older back who doesn't fit the scheme as well.

Stewart is the back running the majority of the read option stuff, Stewart is the back pass blocking, etc. In today's NFL RBs just don't have trade value either.....you can find any RB off the street and insert him in a good offense.

I'm with the get what you can out of a trade of D Will and bring in some young blood scat back to back up Stew.

I'm a fan of D Will but age, availabilty of good young rb these days, Stew, and philosophy of this team makes me feel like it might be time to move on.

    • Sounds like the pressure of all the fans wanting him fired might finally be getting to him... That, or Rico said "trade me now if you aren't going to make me the lead back"
    • I have been paying so little attention after losses (and wins, actually, because I'm mildly excited by them), that I missed Dave's seeming change of heart on Rico and Chuba.  Just when I criticized him for not being able to make the tough decisions and wanting to be Mr. Politically Correct nice guy, when asked about the timeshare between Chuba and Rico, he says:   "We cannot ignore the fact that Rico has been exceptional in a couple of games and in the opportunities he's had over the last two weeks. He's made some excellent plays, love the tempo and violence that he's running with. And these are all things we're talking about and working through this week as we look back on these last four games and really taking a snapshot of what's been successful for us. These are conversations that we do definitely have to have."   On basically whether or not it was his job to keep the RBs "happy," DC replied:   "Yeah, that's not the goal," he replied. "The goal is to make sure we put the right guys out there. That's my job. So I really do have to look at that and evaluate it and make the best decision for the Panthers, collectively. And for me, I have to make sure I keep it about the football."   So now all of a sudden, he knows his job. Well, some of you might say that he always knew his job. My response is that he surely wasn't putting it into action. You watch what people do, not what they say. And that even applies here. We'll actually see if his actions match the words of his newfound epiphany pertaining to our two top RBs., something that we saw a couple of weeks ago (or at least a week ago).    https://pantherswire.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/panthers/2025/10/27/panthers-week-8-dave-canales-rico-dowdle-chuba-hubbard/86923984007/
    • Just about everyone I have ever seen that was a first time HC, mostly successful coordinators, said there was stuff they couldn’t have imagined.  Canales only had one season as a coordinator. A steep learning curve should be expected. Help in the form of a mentor would have been a good idea.
