How do coaching changes/hirings work?

I get player trading, and after the Gruden to TB thing, teams are not allowed to trade picks for coaches. But how do teams hire coaches that are under contract with another team? Obviously Im asking about Chud. How long is his contract here? If he decides to take a head coaching job elsewhere, does Carolina just lets his contractual obligation go? Just something Ive been wondering about, thought yous could enlighten me...

Coaching contracts can be enforced for positions other than head coach I beleive. As for head coaches if it is a promotion from a coordinator to a head coach position then teams can't block it. But obviously head coaches can't get go elsewhere when they are under contract. In Chud's case he can definitely go elsewhere and we can't stop it. Without seeing the contract though you can't really comment on the provisions or compensation issues.

I think the coordinators/assistants are basically on a similar contract timeline as the head coach. I could be wrong but usually when a head coach gets fired, all his coordinators/assistants are usually gone with him. Also, a team has to get permission to talk to another team's coaches. So in our case, the Jags got permission from the Panthers to interview Chud for their head coaching position.

HE IS NOT GOING ANYWHERE. No where else in the league will he get the opportunity he does now. What other team has a high powered, young and skilled offense as we do, that he can pretty much devise whatever plays he can dream of? The answer to that question is NONE. Yes other teams will be looking at him (because they should), but with the TE, WR's, RB's we have and CAM I just do not see this happening. I really hope I am not wrong on this one.

What teams would be making a play for him right now? RAMS? no, TAMPA? God NO!, JAX?!?! Really? Chud will go there to a team with Yo Gabba, MJD(a beast), a good TE and no WR with a ish fan base?! i don't think so........

"Sure, you have our permission to interview him. He's under contract for the next X years, but sure, you have our permission..."

No but it puts us in a real bad position to take that stand.

We wouldn't want to have a reputation for holding coaches back.

Yes. It is an NFL rule.

Not so sure about that. Otherwise why would they have to seek our permission?

I'm drawing an inference here so if you know that as fact Ill defer but I'm not so sure.

actually no. they can deny it, but they can't be selective with it.

if they let one team talk to him they have to grant it to every team.

per league's anti-tampering policy...

hmmm...

The NFL does not differentiate between levels of assistant coaches in its rules regarding their availability to interview with other teams. Whether the coach is a defensive line coach or an offensive coordinator, the rules are the same. If a team wishes to interview an assistant coach who is still under contract with another team for its head coaching position, the current team is required to give permission for the interview as long as it happens between the end of the team's season and March 1. After March 1, teams can still ask, but the current team is not obligated to give permission.

i guess we're both right.

it all depends on when it happens.

Can't deny permission for a head coaching job. Otherwise you can.

Asking permission for a HC job is a formality. For every other position it is neccessary to have discussions.
