The problem is that guys like Matt Ryan were declared the next big thing before he did anything to prove it. He had a decent rookie year and he was blown up by people in the media because he fit the mold of what they want a good QB to be.

Even after Cam's great rookie performance certain people like Narwocki want to put a slew of caveats by his achievements to diminish them instead of just saying "I screwed the pooch on this one."

Many of Cam's critics went from saying "He is going to struggle because the Panthers have no offensive weapons in the passing game and had no OTAs" to now trying to backtrack but save face by saying "Well Chudzinski is just a genius who made Derek Anderson a Pro Bowler" or "Their coaching staff really used Cam well" or "Wow he has sooooo many weapons no wonder he played well!!" Sometimes QBs can make offensive coordinators and teammates look like geniuses and pro-bowlers.

Anything to try and prevent themselves from giving the praise to Cam Newton who took the worst offense in the NFL and made them a top 5 offense (along with the help of a competent OC).

I don't remember the same caveats for Ryan, Bradford, Big Ben, or Manning in their rookie campaigns.

Ok, true story time! On draft night, my redskin buddy was mocking our pick of Newton. I text him the following......If we select Jawalrus Russell 2.0 then I'm burning your house down out of protest! He ask, "why not ur house?" I replied, "That would just be stupid....something Sir Cameron Newton: Leader of Men, Lover of Puppies...Esquire would do!"

Happy to admit I was wrong!

Props to this writer for taking ownership of his comments.

I got on the Cam wagon as soon as they drafted, but I had my doubts all the way up to the Arizona game. I have never been more happy to be wrong and I hope he continues to make fools out of most of us.

Question: Do we not have a ton of weapons now?

Follow up Question: Did Chud not make Derek ANderson a Pro Bowler?

And I guess my answer to your response about Ryan, Flacco, Ben, Eli is that Ryan and Flacco fuging suck and are completely overrated, Ben is overrated because of his rings, 1 of which he tried to single handily lose for them but he's still pretty good, nowhere near elite, and Eli has never been praised that much by anyone, until recently when his play has improved and he's on the cusp of going to his second superbowl with a pretty injury ravaged team around him. Maybe they learned that a few years makes all the difference and they don't want to be too quick to hand out praise now. They handed it out too quickly to Ryan, Flacco, Freeman, Vick, etc and all those guys fuging suck (except occasionally Andy Reid figures out how to get guys wide open that Vick doesn't miss) and now they just want to take all things into consideration when giving praise.

In summary: Ryan sucks, Flacco sucks, Ben is overrated, Freeman sucks, Eli has earned his praise lately and they don't want to repeat mistakes so they are taking a slow approach to praise.

I do, especially with Bradford.

There were definitely caveats, but like usually happens, those get lost in the hype.

There will always be doubters. Heck, the year the Panthers made it to the Super Bowl, there were people who said we lucked into it or only got there because the rest of the field was weak or someoreason or another.

The bigger question: why do we care?

If we succeed, so what if everybody else makes excuses or discounts it? Doesn't take away the feeling :D

If we don't, then all the "moral victories" in the world won't make it any better.

Results are what matter.

Talk is just talk.

Answer: What big time weapons are on this top 5 offense that weren't on this terrible offense last year?? Is Olsen, Shockey, and Naanee enough to turn last years offense into a top 10 offense??

Follow up answer: He did. He also was also the offensive coordinator in 2008 when the Browns scored 11 points or less in 10 of their 16 games including 6 single digit games and two shutouts. But he is a genius.

Your last paragraph is my point. They were all overrated because they fit the mold of what the media thought a QB should be.

And none were doused with a slew of caveats to diminish their accomplishments the way some were doing with Cam. They were ready to dive in head first that they were all Super Bowl QBs.

Not quite true. There are analysts who are measured and reasonable in the way they look at quarterbacks. They just tend to be in the minority and don't get much attention.

It's the bombastic ones (the Jim Romes, the Skip Baylesses, the Tony Cornheisers, etc) that everyone talks about because these days sports media is more about entertainment than analysis.

If you go by the general media, pretty much all quarterbacks are overrated.

I found one for you on Bradford so I will give a pass on Bradford.

If you haven't already guessed, I'm not a big fan of modern sports media

It's all entertainment, no analysis. Everybody wants to make a big bold statement that all the people will talk about (and they can crow about later) rather than actually looking at real word possibilities.

Granted, that's fans too, but fans are fans. I'd like to think more could be expected of "journalists"

No, my last paragraph is not your point. Maybe I'm not conveying my message and maybe it's my opinion v yours. I don't think the "mold" is what made them overrated by the media. I think people are too quick to look at an offense's or team's success and put it on the QB, same with failure. They saw those teams improve offensive and have some success and automatically attributed it to the QB, same thing happened with VY and The Golden Calf of Bristol, neither of which fit into the mold of a traditional QB.

I think the media got burned because they didn't look at the defense as a contributor to the offense (look at Flacco not putting up any points except off of great field position from turnovers), they didn't look at the impact the running game has on the young QBs (see Ryan and Turner in ATL), they didn't look at a lot of things that might make young QBs look better than they are, and it bit them.

I'm saying, they realize this team has a lot of weapons, a healthy SS, two brand new TEs, healthy RBs, a new #2 and #3 receiver, and an offensive philosophy that doesn't include a punt on the play sheet.

Like I caution many on here to do, let's just wait a few years, at least just one more, to see if what we have is real. It's not about fitting a mold, it's about accurately judging the QB as a part of the offense and team, not judging the offense and team and then grading the QB.

I myself was blasted for this a long time ago, before you were a fan, and I think people are starting to catch on.

I couldn't agree with you more. Many are either trying to be the news instead of reporting the news or are just flat lazy and/or stupid.

Admittedly, the audience is a big part of the problem. If you can't say it in less than 30 seconds in a cool sound bite, they probably won't listen.

Mind you, I could live with that if it only applied to sports. The sad thing is that's true of politics and other things that really matter as well :(

I don't think most sane people believe that The Golden Calf of Bristol is a great or even good QB at this point. His hype has been surrounded in the manner of how they won and the polarization of him as an NFL QB.

My main point is that it seems that many are still trying to deflect Cam's success to others. No doubt that it is in may ways true, but he is still being held to a higher standard than many of the other QBs that have come in to the NFL in recent years.

We have some weapons on offense, I agree. But in the eyes of these media guys, what changed from before the season when they would say that our offense is terrible and has no weapons to now we have so many weapons that Cam had the plate set up for him?

For the record, before the season I was one of the ones saying we had those weapons and we just needed a competent QB and many of the "haters" poo pooed on me.

And I agree that we have some new tight ends, but do we really have a #2 and #3 receiver or just bodies who fill those roles?? And were those additions really such big additions that they are the true reason for our offensive turnaround that ended up being the biggest in NFL history??

When a rookie throws for 4,000 yards, rushes for 700 yards, and accounts for 35 TDs at what point do we stop making excuses for the guy's success and start realizing that he is the real deal (no pun intended)??

As for your last comment, Panther's fandom doesn't begin when you register on the Huddle.
