Fletcher Cox - DT - Miss St.

Be warned, however: According to a recent research report about DTs being drafted in the first round--something like 38% success rate over the last 5 years or so. The reason? I think their athleticism is improving because the college game is spreading out, they are becoming workout warriors. They are pushed into the fray too early. They are drafted too early based on need.

Buyer beware. Sorry, I could not provide the link because I dont want to find it--I posted it here at the time it came out.

Nice post, somewhat validating. :beatdeadhorse5:

i don't like using bust percentages because it all falls down to your ability to recruit well and coach properly.

you don't bump someone down the list because that position historically has a higher percentage of not working out. you trust your scouts, abilities to observe, your decision making skills, and your coaches and pick the right player, history and percentages be damned.

To an extent, but sometimes players just come in and do not pan out.. regardless of how much homework you do. See all draft busts.

agreed, but you can't/shouldn't take much into consideration bust percentages at said position. you consider every draft pick a risk and base it on individual merits.

now i can see some people holding off on drafting a certain position because of the amount of time typically involved in developing someone at that position, but not anything like "bust rates"...esp. league wide.

some teams might have a harder time developing certain positions and may have had a higher level of failure at developing them. in that situation you should take your lack of success into consideration, but i don't buy into the idea that you should avoid certain positions because of a league wide bust average.

you've got to take into consideration teams that just suck at developing players like the lions, raiders, browns, and rams have had for quite a few years. those teams skew the results.

MHS's scouting prowess has led him to basically make the same argument this year that he did last year

simply find the assumed "safest pick" and think these bust rate articles are going to stop the real GMs from drafting DTs in the first round any time soon

RB, who do you think the Panthers should draft, and why?

The two biggest needs are in the interior and at 2 corner, and the gap between the two needs (fixing the former is a bigger priority than the latter) means that unless Morris Claiborne is sitting there at 9, you draft DT or Coples, who can play both inside and outside in a 4 man front (would help fix our deficiencies defending the run against the strong side as well). As far as which DT to draft, it depends on who looks the best on film and who projects to be the best pro based on their willingness to learn.

Who do you think is the best DT? Fletcher Cox for me btw

I think free safety might be a bigger need than corner just because we don't know what we have in hogan(not saying we shouldn't draft a corner because of hogan btw), I just think safety play has become more important in the NFL today

Brockers or Poe

Besides Barron the safeties in this draft aren't any good, this might be something we're going to have to patch up in free agency
