Panthers' Cap Room + New Rule

Ruff

Recommended Posts

Rams: $3.5 million.

Raiders: $3.23 million.

Panthers: $2.8 million.

Colts: $2.5 million.

According to PFT we have $2.8mil right now in cap room. That's definitely in the bottom half of the league, but, also according to PFT:

On Sunday, we had several items regarding a new twist in the labor deal that allows teams to automatically carry over any unused cap space from one year to the next. To do it, the team in question simply has to want to do it, and to reduce its intentions to writing.

There’s no down side. Though some thought that carrying over cap space would increase the per-team minimum spending requirement that debuts in 2013, the 89-percent floor comes only from the unadjusted cap.

So, it doesn't seem all that bad now. We can clear a million by released Clausen, and we can gain almost three million from this past season. That frees up almost four million in cap space.

I really think it would be unwise to release clausen before preseason. I am by no means a clausen supporter. I would like to see what he can do in the preseason first. With another year under his belt, and a good qb coach at his side im really curious to see what kinda progress he has made. I know he was inactive for most of the season, but i just have a weird feeling about him. Also having cam newton on his side teaching him what a winning work ethic looks like can only help. Dont just outright release him.

Id rather see what someone else can do in the pre season. Pickles is done.

I posted the following in another thread (the one about cutting JC).

I don't know who to believe anymore regarding our cap situation. Rotoworld says we have to get rid of almost $10 million in cap by mid-March. Just 2 days ago, the Observer said we were at $124 million currently, or about what the cap is expected to be. A while back, I saw elsewhere we were at $127 million.

At this point, unless we hear something from Jerry or Marty directly, I think our exact cap situation remains an unknown.

Then I come to this thread and it says we may be between $2 and $4 million under with a carryover.

Any wonder why so many are confused about our actual cap situation? Any doubt that MH has a better handle on it than any of us or those in the media?

If we don't cut Pickles before March 15th, then we owe him that $923,000 roster bonus. I do not want to pay almost 1 million to watch Clausen throw picks in the preseason.

Our only hope to get anything out of Clausen imho, is hope that the Seahawks would give us a 6th or 7th for him....Or if we wanted their 3rd round draft pick to use, give them next years 3rd and throw Clausen in as well too..uhh "sweeten the deal".....But doubt either these will happen because every other team knows they can get him once we cut him.

Cutting players:

Mike Goodson saves $615,000; Armanti Edwards saves $412,000; and according to sport trac cutting Harstock would save $840,000....just some thoughts. Forget cutting Hartstock, but cut Goodson, Edwards, Clausen and Baker...we save 3.9 million.

Add that to at least resigning a semi backloaded Smith contract, restructuring Davis, and restructuring Wharton....we could plausibly save 11.1 million....

with those 7 moves...15 million off whatever our cap number is right now

    • Brother, I don't want to drop the amount of rage I have about BY and the fuging Pickett signing....when murray was free, tua was free, lance was about the same cost. But you know during practice when other teammates see and hear the passing for any of them compared to BY, he may cry right then.... It does feel like Dan and Tillis were told "make BY work, by any means". You recall the first plan was to drop 163 million on OGs to protect the little fellow.......then drafting WRs and they even signed his buddy WR this FA period..... I just go back to Dan Morgan wanting instill competition throughout the roster and T-H-A-T is your QB room ??? bloody hell, what a joke and disrespect to the whole roster outside that group....
    • Id drop this in here- I fully believe nearly ALLL the Tmac hate leading up to the draft came from the Panthers..... There was plenty and it was believable, cause many did just that. There was huge questions and about 85% of the huddle took the cheese hate.  I do have this too- Banks has a broken feet and a history of feet/ankle issues. If he didn't, 19 would have been fair landing spot. Of course, but Prince spoke highly of him in a Twitter post....former teammates and all, but he still made the post and I haven't seen other players prince did so for.... Maybe the 51st on banks, but maaaaaannnn big men with broken feet broken its feels like it never ends well. I mean after brain, spine, I think Feet are the career killer leader.  Draft DL feels weak in every way.    Last morsel- there's a weak rumor of Panthers trading for DT Payne out on the vine....(his price I feel kills it, but new contract solves that for trades)....
    • If we go all in and sell out with Bryce as our QB, it will even more entrench the idea that Tepper is at minimum running the QB room for me. Now i could be wrong and Dan really is that confident in Bryce all by himself, but nothing this team has done in the past 3 offseasons leads me to believe that there hasnt been some noise from big T. He's admitted that he walks through the office making his opinion known. To me, Bryce's output has just not generated that kind of confidence that we are playoff worthy other than against the Rams. Against the SB champs, just damn.
