Panthers should watch and learn from the Drew Brees situation

We might be starring down the same barrel as the Taints if Cam continues to develop. Minus an ugly ass mole, Cam could be in line for "highest paid QB eva" status like that douche bag in New Orleans. If you are Marty and JR, how soon do you start preparing for Cam's second contract?

As soon as you can... Which is 2 seasons from now.

What should we learn? How to not pay your franchise player and potentially piss him off as well as alienate your entire fanbase?? I can't believe they haven't signed Brees yet. He is the one player who has done more than anything to turn that franchise around. If he leaves they are in the basement in 1 year.

Newton will get paid if he continues to play well and improve. We have a long history outside of 2010 in paying our guys and retaining them. Newton will be extended as long as he continues to play well. No fear of that.

Cam Newton, the first pick in this year's draft, would be eligible for a four-year, $22.03 million contract. If the Panthers keep him for a fifth year, his salary would be at the average of the top 10 salaries of other quarterbacks. One unique part about the new system is it should prevent long holdouts. At some point in August, unsigned draft choices lose their leverage if they aren't signed. There is another clause that prevents draft picks from holding out after they sign. If he holds out during the deal, he is prohibited from renegotiating his contract.

So when can we renegotiate his contract? My understanding is that it's after fours years????

Is last offseason not any proof at all that we have no problem dishing out the big bucks for our own?

I'm not questioning us spending, just how long will it take to work out a deal that suits Cam but doesn't hog tie the franchise.

    • Reasonable. I mean I didn’t see a clear path to relief this season myself. As I have typed already, I think the QB FA class is more interesting next season and that draft is supposed to be stacked as well. There just weren’t many options this year.  When you have Tepper to contend with you have to tread lightly around this unless you are 100% certain and willIng to stake your job on it.   There were a couple of outings that helped Bryce a lot in terms of  thinking maybe he can do this, and if you are a supporter you are giving them a lot of weight. You are likely to think just get him some more help and he can do that every week. Which I think Tepper falls into that category.  And the playoffs, division champs, regardless of the way I see that, the supporters will also give that a lot of weight.    And the big one, the atmosphere In BOA for that WC game, Tepper had to be soiling himself over that. If you pulled Bryce out right now you had better be right and your new guy had better make the playoffs and look good doing it or you will be gone and your chance to build your old team back into respectability will be gone too.  So here we have Pickett on a one year deal, and Grier and King. I understand it.
    • Well, seeing as we play the Lions at home this year, pretty sure that rumor isn't true.
    • Totally possible imo, I also caught that snippet from Morgan where he said “If” we sign him. The lack of competition says otherwise tho 🤷‍♂️
