So my boss wants to take me out for "beers"

Well, we ended up meeting last night. We had a couple beers at a bar, as I figured, he was trying to dig out info on some of the people out of my office. Then went a really nice restaurant, he tells the waiter to "hold off" on taking our order, then he proceeds to tell me how he is planning to fire a couple of people that indirectly report to me! The waiter comes back, I still have an uneasy feeling as to what was going on exactly, so I decide to order the most expensive thing on the menu. (figured if something bad is going to happen, Im going out with some nice food). He continues to drink....alot ( kind of like he was medicating himself). I decide to slowly drink my wine, and stay buzzed. After dinner, he tells me that he is happy with my performance, basically that he wants us to do more face to face meetings, and wants to know if there is anything that he can do for me. Pretty cool, I was really relieved. All is good.

Why didn't he ask you to fire them?

So, in other words, you went slow with lots of tongue.
