Comparing QB Robert Griffin III to Cam Newton draws laughs from NFL talent evaluators

Michael Silver did an extensive write up today (hes been busy this week--he did the Quinn The Golden Calf of Bristol article as well)

Read the whole thing, but here are some highlights:

However, if you’ve convinced yourself that RG3 is the second coming of Cam Newton, your imagination has gotten away from you....

...“Well, there’s one other thing,” says a highly respected NFL general manager. “You know – the most superficial thing of all.”

Added a member of the Panthers’ front office: “They’re both black. Let’s call it what it is.”

“They’re totally different animals,” another general manager says. “One guy [Newton] is huge – like 6-6 and [almost] 260. The other guy will be lucky to get to 6-2 and 220 when they measure him. As good a runner as [Griffin] is, you worry about whether a guy like that can take the punishment.”

If anything, in terms of physical stature, Luck is a lot more like Newton. The former Stanford quarterback, listed at 6-4, 235 during the 2011 season, may turn out to be even thicker when he steps on the scale at the combine – and given his accompanying athleticism, that’s a good thing.

The franchise that ultimately lands Griffin will celebrate its good fortune, and draft-night hype being what it is, some of its fans will herald RG3 as the Second Coming.

Just don’t call him the Second Coming of Cam Newton. Superficialities aside, they don’t look anything alike.

Like I said, read the whole thing, its a good one.

A year ago, Newton – at the time not considered the favorite to be drafted first overall – got coaches and personnel people fired up by agreeing to throw at the combine. Then the throwing session began, and the collective enthusiasm plummeted.

“It was ugly,” the same AFC coach said. “We all walked out of there saying, ‘He’s got a nice deep ball, but other than that, he can’t throw.’ Then he goes out and throws for 4,000 yards and sets a rookie record. So, what do we know?"

overcompensate on the next black QB?

:lurk5:

I always compared RGIII to be a more mobile version of Drew Brees. Yet I'm sure Cam doesn't mind people comparing another black QB to himself. In fact, he talked about that earlier in how people was comparing him to Jamarcus Russell. So Cam tried to set a new standard on how people view black QBs. Of course not that I think it is an ethnicity issue, we do the same with white QBs. If a white QB came out of college running like Vick, they would probably compare him to Doug Flutie or Fran Tarkenton.:D

It's the human nature, but one day we will get past how a guy looks on the outside, and look solely on skillset.

    • It’s wild to me that so many of you guys are threatened by the idea of an opposing team fan who is polite in 2025. He’s been posting here on and off for years, usually when our teams play each other which hasn’t been for a while. I’d maybe understand this treatment if it was a falcons or saints fan, but packers fans in general are one of the nicer fan bases as long as you aren’t another NFC north team (especially the bears).
    • Some players excel on the big stage, while others freeze and succumb to the pressure. I’m not convinced Cam took a dive. I think he didn’t handle the stage very well. The pressure got to him and he folded. He wouldn’t be the first quarterback or player to struggle in a Super Bowl. Two HOF examples - John Elway and Jim Kelly. The 2002 MVP, Rich Gannon, threw 5 interceptions against the Bucs. Poor performances happen.  Unless of course you believe all these players threw the games they played in, but if that occurred, surely someone by now would have admitted taking a dive? 🤷‍♂️
    • It was always a matter of time with Cam’s playing style and a shorter shelf life than passers that protect themselves. I suppose Cam could have still been playing in 2028 ten years after the hit took place, but he would need to have evolved as a quarterback and become more of a passer than the dual threat maestro he was. It’s sad because it makes us think of what could have been, but I do feel it was always a matter of time until all the hits took their toll.
