"What has Garcon done that is so special?"

Besides put up numbers comparable to Steve Smith?

1. Steve Smith will be 33 when the season starts and he's going to make $7.75M.

2. Steve Smith is a free agent at the end of the 2012 season and I'll bet money he won't be back in 2013.

There is not even a potential #1 WR on the roster right now, so the team best prepare with a very good #2 and #3 WR to make up for not having a #1 in 2013 unless they intend on drafting someone.

Smith:

2009- 65/15.1/7

2010- 46/12.0/2

2011- 79/17.6/7 (190 catches- 16 TD)

Garcon:

2009- 47/16.3/4

2010- 67/11.7/6

2011- 70/13.5/6 (184 catches- 16 TD)

To be clear, I'm not banging on Steve Smith, I love the guy, but let's face facts...

so what you've done here is make a case for why he would cost a lot more than we could offer.

only problem here is that you've used stats from two years of smitty having crappy QB performance.

you're actually using numbers form '09 and '10 for smith?

dont forget that 09' was Peytons last statistically good year.

Every Colts fan I've talked too, which is more than a few, has said he's nothing special. I wouldn't want to give him a big contract. To the guy that compared him to Smitty, really we're comparing starting receivers with Clausen and a busted down Delhomme throwing to him to a starter with an MVP caliber Manning throwing to him? For seriously?

Yeah, except that Manning wasn't throwing to him any more than Cam was throwing to Smith- but seriously, you're comparing a rookie QB throwing to Smith to Curtis Painter and Jim Sorgi throwing to Garcon? For seriously?

But that's okay. Remember this conversation when the Panthers are searching under rocks trying to find a #1 WR in 2013...

The point is when Smitty had a quarterback (Good Jake, Newton) he put up elite seasons. When Garcon had a hall of famer, he was still an average number 2.

If we sign Garcon, we will still be looking for a number one receiver in 2013 because he isn't one. If you want some advanced statistics on it, FootballOutsiders had him at below average for 2009 and 2010 using DVOA (Defense-adjusted Value Over Average)

and even worse this year

Sign a receiver, I'm all for it. But Garcon is nothing special and not worth a big, or even medium free agent contract.

When evaluating WR's stats can be ver deceiving as you need to look further into the situation.

The reason PG put up numbers last year is because he played on the worst team... one that was always behind, forced to throw meaning he was going to get more opportunities. It's the same reason BL and DG put up numbers under a terrible clausen on a bad carolina team... opportunities... and some one has to get the few yards we do pass for...

What's more important is consistency, seperation, and other skills. IMO from watching PG with the colts this year (2 guys I sit with at the bar are colts fans so I see them a lot) He's no where as good as his numbers may portray.

I would like another good WR, but I am not for reaching for one and wasting $$$ or picks on one that will not meet expectations and we are at the same point in a few years anyway, still looking for one cause we reached and wasted $$ on one that did not come through.

He's got more experience, he's been able to play with Manning. I see no reason why Lafell can't be better.

What has Garcon done that is so special?

not saying hes special, but when comparing garcon and lafell, i would rather take garcon. i think many experts and coaches in the nfl would say the same.

garcon can get more separation from coverage than lafell.
