Panthers Agree With Tolbert On 4 Year Deal

He is NOT going to be converted to TE.

However, he could be used in the passing game to offset the catches by our second TE.

Two back sets with Tolbert in the backfield....slide him underneath and in the flat (in lieu of the second TE).

you are looking at it wrong though.

He will be replacing what Shockey/Olsen were asked to do last year.....which was lineup in the backfield (not as a traditional TE on the line). Tolbert is an upgrade in that position that Shockey was often asked to be. (better blocker/reciever/harder to bring down etc.).

Important to note that the Panthers official announcement on Twitter listed Tolbert as a FB, not an RB. Very minor detail but I promise you as someone from a PR background that the team will be very intentional in how they word annoucements. They also posted that Hurney quote, which stressed how versatile of a player he was, both on offense and ST. I think the trade worries are a bit of an overreaction, although this does feel a bit like a Madden signing when you cut Clausen and make some cap room

I understand that's he's taking on that role, but I wouldn't call that a tight end.

P55, you could be right, but I would like to see the actual rule that states that in regards to trades.

Only thing that I found was that the receiving team gets ALL things with that contract.

What happens if a player is traded or retires?

Answer: We already know that if a player is waived on or before June 1, the remaining signing bonus that has not been included in salary “accelerates” and is included in that year’s team salary. Acceleration also occurs when a player is traded or waived and picked up by another team. The new team is not responsible for any of the original signing bonus. The team that waived or traded the player is responsible for the accelerated signing bonus (in the same manner as described above).

I think it is called H back but it doesn't really matter what you call things. Doesn't matter if Tolbert is a FB or RB. Tolbert will be much better in those spots where Shockey/Olsen were asked to be in the backfield.

The point us that we used a TE as our fullback much of the time. Using our fullback to block or putting him out for passes is the same thing as putting him in at TE. So he is 2 yards off the line instead of on the line. No big deal. Barnidge and Olsen will be the tight ends, Tolbert will just assume some of the things Shockey did last year.

Just because we used our tight ends as fullbacks last season, does not mean fullbacks = tight ends.

Can we at least agree on that? Also, HELL NO to Tolbert lining up at tight end. He's a running back lol

Are you the kinda guy that puts CBs at wide receiver in Madden just because of their speed?

    • Been here a while but rarely post and most of them are smartazz. Mostly lurk just so I can sound informed while hanging out drinking beer in my neighbors garage. Amusingly a Huddle level of knowledge kind of makes you a subject matter expert. Thanks for that.
    • That’s similar as saying MVP Cam is the same as rookie Cam because his mechanics didn’t change. We’re talking about production.
    • In 2025 Sam Darnold had over 1k more passing yards than Bryce Young on 1 less pass attempt. Repeat that to yourself several times and let it sink in. I absolutely love it when people come on here and invoke Sam Darnold like some gotcha. Darnold is the physical prototype for what anyone needs in a franchise QB. All the physical tools. Few people thought he would put it all together on the mental side of the position. He used to make some of the worst decisions you would ever see. At times in the past he made up for that with absurd throws and athleticism. But make no mistake whatsoever no matter how you feel about our starting QB. Bryce Young is a completely opposite conundrum. He lacks virtually any and all physical tools and athleticism and his elite processing is really mediocre at best on a good day and horrific on a bad day. These are realities people should have already been addressing instead of quadrupling down in year four.
