An announcement by the NFL about discipline for the New Orleans Saints for their bounty program is expected shortly, according to the NFL Network.

We don’t know the exact nature of the discipline yet, but the league has said previously it could include suspensions of players, coaches and front-office officials, fines and the loss of draft picks.

As soon as the official announcement is made, I’ll be back to analyze what it means for the Saints.

PAYTON, WILLIAMS, LOOMIS SUSPENDED

Saints head coach Sean Payton will be suspended without pay for one season; GM Mickey Loomis suspended for first eight games; former DC Gregg Williams suspended indefinitely

All below from Jason LaCanfora on twitter:

Saints fined $500K and Sean payton suspended w/o pay for the 2012 season. Mickey Loomis suspended w/o pay for 8 games...

Gregg Williams is suspended indefinitely. Commish will review Williams situation at end of 2012 season and consider reinstatement

Payton's suspension begins April 1, saints assistant head coach Joe Vitt suspended w/o pay for 6 games

So, indeed, the punishments were every bit as severe as most thought were possible. And player discipline still to come

Saints will also have to forfeit 2nd round picks in 2012 and 2013 on top of $500K fine

So Saints don't pick til the 3rd round in April, and will be picking without Sean Payton around, as his suspension starts April 1

The league does not stipulate when GM Mickey Loomis begins suspension but it notes 8 reg season games. With the Brees contract looming...

It appears as if Loomis could still operate the club til Week 1. Again, no date is listed for his start

@JasonLaCanfora

Expecting a decision on bounty discipline for Sean Payton, Mickey Loomis, Gregg Williams and Saints team sanctions to come down shortly

@JasonLaCanfora

Discipline for the individual players involved likely to come at a later but could be addressed broadly today

maybe not, that's how i interpreted it, but here's LaCanfora saying possibly otherwise on individual player punishments

    • Bryce is a really smart kid and I'm sure he knows all the answers to the test but he hasn't been able to overcome his lack of physical tools and other DC's know this and play him accordingly. I think Bryce has good processing but when the correct read is the WR 30 to 40 yards down field and you have a defensive lineman coming at you what can he really do? He just doesn't have the arm to effectively and consistently hurt the defense and I think that's what's gonna do him in.  Pime example look at the INT versus Dallas last year when Thelien was wide open down the seam and Bryce threw it from a clean pocket and the ball was way short. Dc's watched that and knew that Bryce can't throw the ball deep.
    • I'd give Bryce until the trade deadline to prove he's the answer and if he's not I'm dumping him for whatever pick we can get and I'm riding with Dalton the rest of the way.  2 and a half years is enough time to determine if he can be the QB going forward so for Bryce he needs to come out over the next couple of weeks and show that. The other players in the locker room don't wanna waste another year of their careers waiting to see if you'll ever figure it out.  If you took a poll of the players in the locker room I'm sure they'd rather lose with a respected veteran Dalton who at least gives them some creditability versus losing with Bryce who the entire media will say was let down by his supporting cast when in reality it's Bryce's physical limitations that are holding this team back.
    • I agree that he should’ve never been the pick at 1. In my 44 years I’ve never seen a team invest that much in a QB who is my size. I’m not meant for the NFL and neither is he.    Accepting we can’t change the past, I think it’s the correct call to keep playing him hoping that he will prove us wrong. I think we were dumb not to draft a QB this past year and let him learn and compete but that’s our reality.    I’m hoping this is the last year with the BY experiment and he deliverers us 1. To the playoffs or 2. The number one pick and we draft a real QB.
