Panthers Cap Trouble, Link Of Contracts

Recommended Posts

I say we restructure Charles Johnson's contract into one that gives him $1 million per sack in a season, plain and simple. Last season? $9 mil. 2010? $11 and a half mil. The year before that? $4mil. Then you could cap it at $15 mil a season so if he pulls a Jared Allen (I wish) we're not out like $20 mil on the year.

Probably not realistic but $76/6 years and being the highest paid player on our team is fuging ridiculous. That's Peppers money and he is no Pep.

This is not smart.

If he makes money, purely on the # of sacks he record's then you change his incentive on playing. He is going to stop playing the run, and go full speed at the QB every play.

Now if you want to say tackles at or behind the line of scrimmage then you may make a case.

However, he would never ever ever ever agree to this type of restructuring.

Bird in the hand.

Looks like Jansen's contract has been changed - just a type.

Also you can view base salaries by year here: http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/carolina-panthers/

And 2012 salary cap hits here: http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/carolina-panthers/cap-hit/

Seems pretty legit.

Top DE money is now in the $14 to $16 million range. CJ may be a little overpaid, but not by much.

Is it? That seems crazy. I just find it odd how everyone on here is so up in arms about Deangelo's contract when it seems to me that CJ is the most overpaid player on the team. Or maybe I'm just biased cuz he's the highest paid player on the team.

CJs cap figure this season is right in line with his production.

Jared Allen has a cap figure of $14m

Demarcus Ware is $10m

Julius Peppers is a steal at $11m

Elvis Dumervil is $14.5m

Dwight Freeny has a $19m cap figure!

Tamba Hali $14.2m

Clif Avril (who?) $10m

So there are plenty of guys floating around with similar cap figures and similar production.

edit: Just to add to that we probably gave him a little extra to keep him off the Falcons. You guys would all be raging if CJ was sacking Cam.

The NFL releases the salary cap information for teams and players once the contracts have been approved. If you have the media access from the NFL you can get the information directly from the league, that's how the sites like ESPN and Rotoworld get their information.

If you have access to the membership exclusive log in (certified agents/players) for the NFLPA site you can also get the information from the NFL from there by asking for it.

    • Have to stop making everything about BY. They will and have been bringing in players to improve the TEAM, not just Bryce Young. Which is something they should have done BEFORE bringing in a rookie QB. Even Metchie is a generally good pickup at a position of need. He just happens to have played with BY in college. And that doesn't hurt his chances or the team's. Morgan just addressed the biggest areas of need on the team via free agency so they won't be reaching for a position of need in the draft. He's legit picking the best player available for the TEAM in the draft. The o-line was in shambles in 2023. He addressed it in 2024. The d-line was in shambles in 2024. He addressed it in 2025. The pass rush and linebackers were in shambles in 2025. He's addressed it in 2026. Unfortunately good young WRs don't hit the FA market, so can't just throw money at them. You have to draft them. I wonder what some would be saying if they'd spent the amount of cap on the offense that they spent on the defense in 2025 and 2026 - and then used both first round draft picks on defense. Would that have been better in your eyes? No. You would be complaining that the defense is too young to compete and more vets weren't brought in because they're trying to prop up BY. This team should be talented enough now to make some noise in the South. If BY is actually holding them back, then QB will be addressed in 2027. They benched him 2 games into their tenure and you think they're tied to his success. No. That doesn't compute. They're tied to the team's success. BY could throw for 5000 yards and if they're 4 - 13, head's will roll.  TLDR: Their decisions aren't driven by making BY look good. They're trying to improve the team and win games. Period.
    • I still firmly believe that Tepper still has his mandate of make Bryce work or get fired and because of that, it doesn't matter how badly he does... He'll get a long term deal in the 40-50m range and set back this franchise for a decade. Then the Teppers will have another QB infatuation and maybe they get it right then.
