Panthers Will Not Take A Dt In The First Round

Recommended Posts

As an avid fan albeit non X and O detail guy I have followed conventional wisdom in thinking that the primary need for this team is an interior dl presence that can control the line of scrimmage. I think this point is valid but the immediate leap to the conclusion that we should draft a defensive tackle in the first round is not. I am not convinced that Brockers, Cox, or Poe are great enough to be able to step into the lineup and make an impact greater than the guys that are currently under contract.

That said I think if there is not a trade we will pick Coples, Ingramas much as I don't like it Decastro or possible dark horse/reach Stephen Gilmore (2 cb in draft by nfl.com)

Tear it up...

See your point but I respect him to much to consider him in the draft. I think he rides the bench behind Beason.

We could definitely move Beason back to the outside, play Kuechly in the middle, and have Davis be a rotational guy.

^ I agree with this.

My opinion is this that if Coples is off the board, take Kuechly as to me he's simply the BPA, plus LB is a need albeit low on that list.

There's a few positions, and a few players at each position, that I would be okay with drafting.

DT:

Poe, Brockers, Cox, Worthy

DE:

Ingram, maybe Coples

CB:

Claiborne or Gilmore

LB:

Kuechly

I would be happy with any of those picks at #9. None of those players will be there when we draft again at 40. I know it might be a reach for some, but, I think all of these players will be actually solid, 10-year Pros.

That's a HUGE reach for Gilmore.

Mike Mayock said he thinks Gilmore goes in the Top 15 picks. He also said Gilmore was not super impressive at his pro day in positional drills.. but when on to say that he still thinks he could be a Top 15 pick.

    • When we have everyone playing like they should, we can win the Cup. That has been the biggest problem when we get to the playoffs, but this year seems to be fixed mostly. We could have had multiple if we had done this in the past.
    • Here we go Bryce Stan’s you should love this. Hell it may be one of you.  It has every cliche excuse and then some.  Unintentionally hilarious my limit was reached when he said Bryce had it hard because four play callers.
    • Luke goes in to the specifics of what he looked to accomplish in joint practices.  Basically they may work with someone on the opposing team to stress something they feel is a weakness in their own game in a different way that can be done with someone they are familiar with. That they can have predetermined stresses but since neither wants to get injured and it has absolutely no bearing on anything there is not the level of concern that would be in a preseason game.  He would also even chat with opposing OC.   It seems like an interesting nuance among the vets and savy pros.
