Guess Who: "this Guy" Is The Highest Paid Player In The League, And You Have Probably Never Heard Of Him

It is all debatable. When a player is shocked at your initial offer being so huge it probably means the team didn't have a good pulse on the reality of the situation.

His contract alone doesn't irk me....collectively overpaying many does. DE is probably a spot you can complain least about though.

I do disagree on JR needing to show fans he wasn't cheap....anyone who follows Carolina knows JR has never been cheap. If anything he tends to consistantly overpay. He made a 1 yr decision not to pay...who really cares what a few national guys say that haven't paid attention to the fact he has never been cheap.

Actually there were a ton of empty seats in 2010. JR didn't need to show the national types he needed to show the PSL owners that he was serious about building a winner. There was a lot of unrest and I attended a few PSl calls where the issue of not spending was raised.

Marty Hurney offers big contract to keep star player(Williams, Johnson) "This team is so dumb, we always overpay our own guys"

Marty lets player leave in free agency(Witherspoon, Peppers)"This team is so cheap, let's our best guys leave"

Marty picks BPA in draft "This team is so dumb, picking linebackers when we don't need one"

Marty reaches to fill need in draft(E. Brown, Jarrett) "He sucks at drafting, always picking busts"

Your right. the same bitchers and whiners come on here with the same old crap as if it is their money or that we would be spending on free agents if we didn't spend on our own. This isn't Hurney's decisions alone but his, Morrison's and Richardson's. He is just following the philosophy developed. The fact that he spend and brought in free agents in the past and doesn't now shows that he does what he is told. And if you don't like RIchardson's philosophy find another team until new ownership takes over because this isn't going to change anytime soon.

I wonder how they think bitching is going to change anything.

There were tons of empty seats in 2010 bc Jerry committed to handling one season in a certain manner.

What did overpaying prove?

Wouldn't keeping all those guys AND having room/cash to go after more mean more to PSL owners?

Hurney doesn't just overpay stars...Godfrey, Anderson etc are overpaid

Marty tried to overpay Pep. Tried to make him the highest paid defensively player in NFL following a horrible season.

This isn't a good example of a bad decision. Peppers was one of the best defensive players in Football, and year after year played like it. Despite his poor season, it was pretty logical to assume that he would come back and return to his high level of play, which he has. The contract reflected that correct belief

This was an owner who, at a pivital moment in history, had to make a statement. He did what he thought would secure his future and franchise. "Small market" teams, as the nation view us, can have a difficult time in rebuilding or just flat out building at all, look at Jacksonville. He is one of the leaders of the owners and he is a man of action not words.

He had to make a big impact for many reasons. As always we are just having this conversation regarding overpaying way too soon. It hasnt been long enough for it to play out.

Looked like a calculated gamble to me.

Just as an aside, the $30 million they paid CJ this year may have all been paid up front for non-football reasons. They choose not to break the bonus up into 2 or 3 payments over the length of the contract, and, as others have pointed out, from a cap standpoint it really doesn't matter. I suspect Jerry and his partners paid it now for their own reasons, be it taxes, cash available, anticipated outlays for capital improvements in future years, or whatever.

It wasn't logical to offer to make him the highest paid defensive player in the NFL following that horrible season.

That was leverage to be used to sign a guy at better price tag. How many teams do you think would have wanted to make Peppers the highest paid in the NFL following THAT? Washington?

If you have who you think is the best Defensive Player in the league at a Premium position, and think you are getting that for years to come, then there's nothing wrong to ignore one anomaly of a season.

May have already been mentioned, but this week's ESPN the Magazine lists the 50 Top-Paid athletes in the world in terms of salary (excluding endorsements, etc.)

4 Panthers made the Top 50 list.

4. CJ

26. Beason

39. D-Will

44. Kalil

Absolutely insane to see 4 guys from the same team on the list, when the NBA/NFL/MLB/Racing/Boxing are all included. Not saying it's a bad thing since it's how the contracts were structured, just an interesting fact.

if that list was made on salaries for 2012, absolutely none of our players would be in the top 50... many of the other NFL players would be missing from it too (the non-QBs) because a lot of that is related to signing bonuses, which are inflating them.

For some perspective, there are 5 players in the top 10 of that list from the NFL and 4 of those 5 received new contracts last year (the other is Bradford, who had a 2nd year signing bonus or some weird bullshit)

this is because of the new labor agreement. we purposefully did not sign anyone before the lockout - so we gave a lot of guys big contracts right after it. however, other teams will be giving their players even bigger contracts soon, so what looks like huge sums will be shortly dwarfed.
